Wandering: Local History, Nature Trail and October Events
Accommodation in Wandering
Wandering brings together local history, a trail through bushland and events in October. These themes offer different ways to plan your stay: historic sites, a route with views over the town, or a specific event weekend.
Traces of Local History
The Wandering Agricultural Hall was built in 1896 by local builder Robert Turton. Over the course of its history, it has hosted dances, sporting meetings, agricultural meetings, religious services and other public gatherings. Its history of use adds the different community occasions held in the hall to the story of its construction.
The statue “The Horses Came First” commemorates Wandering’s history. Saint Martins Anglican Church opened in August 1929. Alongside the history of the hall, these are other named points of interest for anyone interested in the local past.
Anglican services are held at St Martins Church at 2 pm on the fourth Sunday of every month. As the schedule may change, check the specific date before your visit.
The Wandering Heritage and Nature Trail
The Wandering Heritage and Nature Trail is 1.3 km long, passes through bushland along Wologin Gully and runs behind the Wandering Oval. A lookout offers a view over Wandering; the signposted trail starts at Wandering Caravan Park. Its stated length and the lookout make the trail an easy addition to your day’s plans. Check local conditions before setting out.
October Events: Fair or Campout
The Wandering Campout takes place on the third weekend in October. In 2026, the Wandering Campout Weekend, from 16 to 18 October, is set to include an agricultural show, a Colour Run and camping under the stars at historic Grassdale Farm. Programme details may vary from year to year. The Wandering Annual Fair takes place on the third Saturday in October; recurring dates may also change in future years.
The difference in timing is useful when planning your trip: the Campout is a weekend event, while the Fair takes place on a Saturday. If one of these events is the reason for your trip, check the date for your travel year before arranging your stay around it.
A Riverside Spot Nearby
Nearby Pumphreys Bridge is a picnic and camping area on the Hotham River. Its riverside setting offers a different focus from Wandering’s historic sites and trail. If you are weighing up different interests when planning, you can consider local history, the trail and the riverbank as distinct options.
According to the Shire’s 2025 information pack, Wandering’s main street has the 24 Hour Wandering Fuel Facility, a self-service petrol station open around the clock. Confirm that it is available before relying on it.
