A reef-protected bay, vast sand dunes and water sports give Lancelin several distinct sides. In Lancelin Bay, surfing, snorkelling and diving take centre stage; the dunes lie directly behind the beaches. There are also motorised off-road experiences, nature watching and the historical connection to the Lancelin Ocean Classic. If you’re travelling with different interests, you can treat water, sand, vehicles and nature as separate highlights rather than assuming there’s one programme for everyone.

Water Sports in Lancelin Bay

Protected by a reef, Lancelin Bay offers good conditions for surfing, snorkelling and diving. Check local marine conditions before taking part in water activities.

Surfing and kitesurfing schools in Lancelin teach people of all ages and skill levels. There are also surf schools at Lancelin’s Back Beach for people who want to learn to surf. Individual schools may change, so check which options are available at the time of your trip.

Equipment hire is also important when planning for different experience levels: surfboards and kiteboards are rented to experienced participants who don’t need instruction. Fourteen shipwrecks off the coast of Lancelin form a dive trail for experienced divers. Check diving conditions and access locally.

Sand Dunes and Off-Road Experiences

Vast sand dunes lie directly behind Lancelin’s beaches. Sandboarding is possible on the dunes, and boards can be hired in town. As hire arrangements may change, it’s worth checking availability before your trip.

The Lancelin Off Road Vehicle Area can be used by two-, three- or four-wheeled motorcycles, beach buggies and four-wheel-drive vehicles. These are the different vehicle types specified for the off-road area. Another option is quad tours using ATV or UTV vehicles: they explore Lancelin’s extensive off-road area and last 90 minutes. Tour availability may change.

Nature and Cultural History

Lancelin Bay also offers a nature experience: dolphins forage in its shallow waters on most days.

Nearby, the Turquoise Coast nature reserves form a chain of around 40 islands, islets and rocks between Lancelin and Dongara. The chain stretches from Lancelin Island and Edwards Island to the Beagle Islands group. Lancelin Island is an important seabird breeding island, including for roseate terns and crested terns; it is also the southernmost breeding site of the Common Noddy. Shallow water separates the island from the town. Access and visitor restrictions may change, so check them before visiting.

The Lancelin Sand Dunes are of outstanding cultural and historical significance to the Shire of Gingin and the State of Western Australia. The area also has a specific connection to sporting history: in 1986, the Lancelin Ocean Classic began as a 25-kilometre race from Ledge Point to Lancelin.
