Gija art and cultural perspectives

Contemporary Gija art and cultural perspectives are at the heart of Warmun. The Warmun Art Centre is owned and run by the Gija people. Its gallery showcases contemporary works by Gija artists and gives visitors the opportunity to engage with Gija art and culture. The exhibition area also displays artefacts of Gija culture, as well as recordings of Elders speaking about history, culture and art.

The Art Centre was founded in 1998 by founding members of Warmun’s contemporary painting movement. The Warmun Community Collection comprises more than 300 objects, including paintings and wood carvings. A significance assessment in 2006 ranked it among Australia’s most significant collections in historical and cultural terms. The Centre also showcases expressions of Gija Country and Ngarrangkarni (Dreaming) stories. In Warmun, you can encounter contemporary artworks, collection objects and recordings in which Elders share their perspectives on culture and history.
