Windwhistle combines gorges shaped by volcanic activity with walks, wide-open views and sporting activities. At Washpen Creek, the landscape tells the story of a volcanic eruption 80 million years ago; other trails pass old coal mines or wind through native bush. Golf and organised outdoor activities add to the choice. If you’re looking for accommodation, it’s worth first considering whether landscapes and walking, a multi-day tour or sport will be the focus of your trip.

Volcanic Gorges and Trails

Washpen Falls was formed 80 million years ago by a major volcanic eruption that created the deep gorges and canyons at Washpen Creek. The Washpen Falls Track leads through the Volcanic Canyon Reserve via paths, stairs and boardwalks. From there, panoramic views stretch across the Canterbury Plains to the coast. Washpen Falls is also recognised as part of the New Zealand Rātā Trail. Its geological origins, the route itself and the expansive views combine to create a multifaceted landscape experience.

The Rakaia Gorge Walking Track offers a different focus: it follows the edge of the gorge and passes lava flows of rhyolite, pitchstone and andesite. The entrances to several old Snowdon coal mines lie along the track, bringing geological features and mining history together on the same route. The track begins at Rakaia Gorge Road. From the car park on the Selwyn side, access is via the road. Check local conditions before setting out.

The Rockwood Station Bush Walk offers a different kind of landscape: the trail winds through native bush along Rockwood Stream and takes about an hour for people with a moderate level of fitness. As it crosses private land, access must be arranged by phone. RockRidge, by contrast, is an all-inclusive, two-day, 31-kilometre hike through unspoilt landscapes in the Windwhistle area. The comparison gives a clear sense of the different time commitments; check RockRidge’s seasonal opening dates separately.

Golf and Organised Activities

Fable Terrace Downs Resort has an 18-hole championship golf course with a par of 72 and four tees on every hole. These details give a clear picture of the course layout. As access arrangements can change, check them before making plans. Organised activities are also available: NewZengland operates a purpose-built shooting range at Terrace Downs Resort for clay target shooting, archery and air rifle shooting. Some activities require a booking.

The Inland Scenic Route 72 also passes through the countryside around Windwhistle. It adds a scenic route through the surrounding area to the specific walking destinations, without suggesting that the road itself runs through Windwhistle.

More to Explore in the Selwyn District

The wider Selwyn District offers further nature and cultural experiences. Kura Tāwhiti/Castle Hill consists of striking limestone formations and is located in an area of special significance to Ngāi Tahu. Internationally, it is regarded as a world-class destination for climbing and bouldering. This offers a different perspective from Windwhistle’s gorge trails and golf.

You can also explore cultural history in the Selwyn District: St Paul’s Anglican Church and the old Tai Tapu Library were both completed in 1932. Sir Heaton Rhodes largely funded their construction and lived in nearby Otahuna. The two buildings connect a specific historical date with the story of their funding and the setting in which people lived at the time.
