Discover Doyleston
Accommodation in Doyleston
Doyleston’s history is reflected in concrete details: the former town name Cheddar recalls the importance of dairy farming, and a memorial in the Memorial Library commemorates people who served in two world wars. There are also the historic Boxing Day Sports, outdoor archery, and a walking and cycling path.
Memorials and Local History
Doyleston Memorial Library contains a memorial with two large white marble plaques. They list 42 people who served in the First World War, including six who were killed. They also list 32 soldiers from the district who served in the Second World War; one was killed. Doyleston Memorial Garden is designated as a passive memorial reserve.
The town’s name also has a historical twist: Doyleston was once renamed Cheddar to acknowledge the importance of dairy farming to the area. Later, the name Doyleston was restored. Strathlachlan Homestead dates from 1882 and has been restored from its foundations to its chimney tops. The memorial, town name, and homestead offer different insights into local history.
Osborne Park and Getting Around
In the early 20th century, Osborne Park hosted the Boxing Day Sports as an annual event. Twenty-one railway carriages came to Doyleston for this historic occasion. The same park is home to the Ellesmere Archery Club, which offers outdoor archery at longer distances.
Doyleston is on the main road from Christchurch to Leeston and Southbridge. Roads from Brookside, Irwell, Lakeside, and Killinchy also meet here. The Leeston Doyleston Way is a 2.1-kilometre walking and cycling path between Drain Road in Doyleston and Manse Road in Leeston. It opened in 2020. These local topics bring together getting around, the park’s history, and a defined route.
More to Explore in the Selwyn District
The wider destination of the Selwyn District offers cultural and landscape attractions, too. St Paul’s Anglican Church and the old Tai Tapu Library were both completed in 1932. Their construction was funded largely by Sir Heaton Rhodes, who lived nearby at Otahuna. The two buildings therefore share a completion year and a connection to their benefactor.
The Rakaia Gorge Walking Track follows the edge of the gorge through striking geological areas featuring lava flows of rhyolite, pitchstone, and andesite. Kura Tāwhiti/Castle Hill features striking limestone formations in an area of particular significance to Ngāi Tahu. Internationally, it is regarded as a world-class destination for climbing and bouldering.
Cave Stream is a 594-metre-long cave in Cave Stream Scenic Reserve. Two short tracks lead to the entrances, and you can walk through the cave between them. The cave conditions require care. For a very different activity, Alpine Jet Thrills offers JetBoat and AirBoat experiences from Springfield. Operators and operations can change, so check current offerings before making plans.
Regional produce and crafts are also among the Selwyn District’s attractions. The Lincoln Farmer’s & Craft Market is listed as a year-round offering, with produce sourced entirely from the region and handmade crafts. Dates may change, so check before visiting. When choosing accommodation, it helps to decide whether to focus on Doyleston’s local history or include more cultural, natural, and activity-based attractions across the Selwyn District.
