The landscape around Lake Coleridge has evolved over millions of years. The area also tells the story of New Zealand’s hydropower history and how technology and village life are connected. The walking trails here vary in duration, difficulty and their landscape and historical themes. This gives you practical guidance for planning your time in the area around your interests and finding suitable accommodation for your trip.

Hydropower and village history

Construction of New Zealand’s first state-owned hydroelectric power station began at Lake Coleridge in 1911. Lake Coleridge Power Station began operating on 25 November 1914. The start of construction and the start of operations mark two distinct stages in this engineering history. Building on glacial moraine was a significant engineering achievement: the geological foundation and the technical undertaking together shape the station’s history.

Electric Cottage was built in 1915 as an example of a fully electric home. The cottage is privately owned, but can still be seen on a walk through the village. Information panels in Lake Coleridge Village tell the story of the surrounding area. This means you can encounter the local past both in the story of hydropower and in the themes explored on a walk through the village.

Choose a trail by time and difficulty

The Tailrace Track is an easy, 30-minute loop starting from Lake Coleridge Village. Its features include river views, a lookout over the Rakaia River, the power station and the village’s history. The Forest Loop Track starts at Hart Arboretum. This moderately difficult loop takes 45 minutes and offers views of the power station, the Rakaia River and the village; be prepared for steep uphill and downhill sections along the way. The easier 30-minute loop and the moderately difficult 45-minute trail allow you to weigh up the time required and the level of challenge. Check trail conditions before setting out.

The trail to Lake Coleridge is a moderately difficult, 2.5-hour return walk starting from Lake Coleridge Village. This gives you a longer option alongside the two shorter loops. When planning, it’s worth considering your available time and the difficulty of the route; trail conditions can change.

Experience the landscape and find your way around

The 1,240-metre-high Peak Hill is located on the shore of Lake Coleridge. In fine weather, it offers impressive views of the lake and surrounding area. The trail is exposed to the weather, so conditions should be taken into account when deciding to visit this viewpoint.

At Hart Arboretum, the Tree Trail provides information about some of the trees there. This offers a different focus from the walking trails, which feature views of the power station, river or village. Road conditions are another practical consideration: the main road to Lake Coleridge Village is sealed, while the other roads are gravel. As road conditions can change seasonally, it’s a good idea to check the latest conditions before driving.
