Burnie brings together a wide variety of travel experiences: coastal moments at West Beach, penguin watching, paths through parks, and glimpses of architecture and art. There are also experiences centered on whisky and technology. If you’re looking for a hotel in Burnie, you can start by thinking about which of these sides of the town you want to shape your trip. This makes it easier to plan around specific interests, from watching wildlife to exploring culture.

Coastal life and little penguins

At West Beach, beach volleyball nets stand in front of the Surf Life Saving Club. During the summer months, the Burnie Volleyball Association holds competition games there. A walkway connects the beach to the little penguins’ habitat at its western end. The beach and wildlife watching offer two distinct starting points for planning your day.

Tours at the Little Penguin Observation Centre at Parsonage Point follow their own seasonal schedule: volunteers from Friends of Burnie Penguins offer free tours every evening at dusk from 1 October to 31 March. If you want to make this a highlight of your visit, plan your stay within this period.

Trails, waterfalls and views

In Burnie Park, a short walking path leads from a duck-filled pond to Oldaker Falls. The park is also home to the Burnie Inn, Burnie’s oldest colonial-era building. The park therefore offers both a path to a waterfall and a glimpse into the town’s architectural history.

There are several ways to get active, each with its own character. View Road Reserve, also known as Stoney Creek Reserve, has walking paths, a pump track, mountain biking trails and cycling paths. Romaine Reserve is part of a walking and boardwalk trail that circles Burnie, and can also be used for cycling. As the infrastructure there may undergo periodic maintenance, it’s worth checking current trail conditions before setting out on a specific route.

For a view, head to Wilf Campbell Upper Burnie Lookout, also known locally as Upper Burnie Lookout. From there, panoramic views follow the coast from Burnie’s port and central business district to Round Hill. In Fern Glade Reserve, a path follows the riverbank, where you can watch platypuses in their natural habitat. The lookout, riverside path, and cycling and walking options each offer a different focus rather than prescribing a single way to enjoy the outdoors.

Architecture, history and art

You can explore Burnie’s architecture on your own: the Federation Walk provides information about buildings in the town centre and nearby residential areas. It highlights significant Federation-era examples of domestic and civic architecture. The town’s streets also feature a notable concentration of Art Deco architecture. Both perspectives draw attention to buildings, but emphasize different architectural styles.

The Burnie Regional Museum’s Pioneer Village collections represent the history of Burnie and the surrounding North West region. The Burnie Regional Art Gallery presents an annual exhibition program featuring touring exhibitions, special exhibitions, school and community programs, and curated displays from its permanent art and museum-related collections. If you want to plan your stay around a particular offering, you can distinguish the gallery’s annual program from individual events at the Makers Technology and Innovation Hub: the hub offers technology demonstrations and events for the community, and individual dates may vary.

Whisky experiences at Hellyers Road Distillery

Experiences at Hellyers Road Distillery include whisky flights, straight-from-the-cask tastings and behind-the-scenes tours. Whisky lovers can also choose the Distillers’ Choice experience, launched in 2026: they taste their own 500 ml single malt whisky using the historic Copper Dog system and bottle it by hand. The experiences range from a behind-the-scenes look to a personal tasting and bottling process.
