Howth: Coast, Beach Sections and Routes
Accommodation in Howth
Howth is defined by its distinctive coastal features and clear road connections. Two beach sections have their own lengths, directions and landmarks. The old and new roads also meet here, and the Central Coast coastal detour ends in Howth. For planning your trip, coastal observation and route orientation offer different perspectives.
Two Beach Sections, Different Coastal Features
Beach section T 1100 at Howth 3 lies east of the rocky headlands and runs 400 metres eastwards to the next rocky coastal section. Both references help with orientation: the rocky headlands lie to the west, while the next rocky section marks the eastern end. This 400-metre stretch of coast can therefore be identified by its location and direction.
Section T 1098 in Howth begins differently. It starts at a seawall built to protect the highway and runs 300 metres southeast, past the small projecting mouth of the Heybridge Rivulet. At the end is a 50-metre rocky and gravelly promontory. At 400 metres, T 1100 is 100 metres longer than the 300-metre T 1098 section. The additional 50 metres refers only to the length of the promontory at the end of T 1098. The two sections can therefore be distinguished by both their length and their landmarks: rocky areas define the course of one, while the other also features a seawall and river mouth.
Howth as a Route Point
The old and new roads meet in Howth, and the Central Coast coastal detour also ends there. If you plan to take this detour, check the signage and conditions locally. This lets you incorporate the route and its specific orientation into your plans, rather than treating the endpoint as another sightseeing destination.
The Howth Heavy Vehicle Rest Area is on the Bass Highway between Nine Mile Road and Reynolds Road. These two road names locate the rest area along the highway. The rest area has a building with sanitary facilities and a bus shelter. Facilities may be subject to maintenance or change; check their condition before your visit.
A Historical Trace
Howth’s local history also has a historical perspective. In July 2017, it was decided that Pablo’s should get a new, safe home in Howth as a tourist attraction. This dated episode adds a cultural-historical perspective on the planning for Pablo’s at the time to the coastal and route perspectives. It places the story in its historical context without presenting the decision as a description of a place to visit today.
Choose Accommodation to Suit Your Travel Plans
When choosing a hotel for a trip to Howth, first consider whether the coast or Howth as a route point will be the main focus of your stay. The beach sections and the road and route connections offer different points of interest. Check the specific location of an option against your own plans. This way, your choice reflects the places and experiences that matter most during your stay.
