Accommodation in Port Huon
Port Huon combines sweeping landscape views with a rich trading harbour history and opportunities for active pursuits. From here, you can look out over the Huon River, Bruny Island, the D’Entrecasteaux Channel and the Hartz Mountains. There’s also a trail through natural habitat, a boardwalk through wetlands, and a range of ways to enjoy sports and activities on the water.
Views Between the River, Island and Mountains
The landscape around Port Huon offers a variety of viewpoints: the Huon River, Bruny Island, the D’Entrecasteaux Channel and the Hartz Mountains. Together, they give the views both a maritime and mountainous character. If you like to make landscapes and water the focus when choosing a destination, these sweeping views are among Port Huon’s distinctive features.
Trading Harbour with an Apple History
Port Huon was once a busy trading harbour and a destination for international apple ships. They carried the region’s famous fruit all over the world. The former apple trade is part of the town’s history and gives it a character beyond that of a purely scenic stop.
The original harbour remains and is now used by boats belonging to salmon producer Huon Aquaculture. These boats are not open to the public. The harbour’s past and present use can therefore be understood as two distinct aspects of Port Huon: the former apple trade on the one hand, and the boats’ current use on the other.
On Foot, in the Water and Playing Sports
The Port Huon to Geeveston Walking Track starts in Port Huon, is 3 km long and passes through natural habitat along the Kermandie River. The trail connects to a 500-metre-long boardwalk that crosses wetlands to the Port Huon Sports and Aquatic Centre. The track and boardwalk offer different landscape experiences: the trail runs through natural habitat by the river, while the boardwalk continues across the wetlands.
The Port Huon Sports and Aquatic Centre has facilities for volleyball, netball, basketball and badminton. The centre also has a 25-metre indoor pool and offers swimming lessons and swimming classes for adults. Programmes and facility details may change, so check the current offerings before visiting.
Harbour Area and Boat Tour
Near the docks in Port Huon are Shipwrights Point Regatta Point, a playground and a motorhome dump station. Individual facilities may be upgraded over time; check their current status before your visit if needed.
You can also explore Port Huon from the water: the Peninsula Cruising tour departs from Port Huon Marina, opposite the Kermandie Hotel. Confirm the tour’s availability before booking.
