Discover West Wyalong
Accommodation in West Wyalong
There are different ways to discover West Wyalong: the self-guided Heritage Walk takes you to significant buildings and places, while the restored Dakota DC-3 brings aviation history to life. Wetlands, birdwatching, a scenic track and activities on the water offer other points of interest. This means you can focus your choice of outings on culture, activity or nature.
History at your own pace
The West Wyalong Heritage Walk passes significant buildings and places in the town. Because the walk is self-guided, you can explore the stops without a guided tour. An interactive audio guide through the izi.TRAVEL app adds stories and information at each stop. The walk thus connects the places you see with the stories behind them—a way to get to know West Wyalong through its built history.
The restored Dakota DC-3 in Lions Park also tells part of the town’s story. Following its restoration, the aircraft is back there, preserving an important chapter of local aviation history. Since arriving in 1983, it has been a familiar sight in West Wyalong and a special attraction for residents and visitors. Its long presence and restoration give the aircraft two distinct connections to the town: it has been part of the familiar landscape for decades, while also keeping aviation history in view.
Murals add art and remembrance to these discoveries. The Big Bull Mural is a 3D mural on the wall of the Splatter Gallery at 192 Main Street. The West Wyalong S&C Club Mural is at the West Wyalong Services and Citizens Club and is dedicated to Australian service personnel. The subjects are quite different: one is a 3D mural, the other a mural honouring people.
On foot, by bike and in nature
The Green Corridor Walking and Cycling Track is a scenic route connecting many of the town’s key attractions. The first section is about 5 kilometres long and is suitable for a leisurely walk, jog or bike ride. It offers a different focus from the Heritage Walk: while the latter takes you to significant buildings and places, the Green Corridor is all about the route, scenery and getting active. The approximate distance refers to the first section.
At Cooinda Reserve, scenic wetlands offer opportunities for leisurely walks and observing native wildlife. The waterways of Cooinda Waters add canoeing to these nature experiences. Free camping is also available at Cooinda Reserve around the clock. The Poppet Head in the same reserve recalls West Wyalong’s historic past—another perspective on a place that is also known for nature and activities on the water.
Lake Cowal is another birdwatching destination in West Wyalong. Access is via a public reserve on Clear Ridge Road. While the wetlands at Cooinda Reserve also offer leisurely walks and opportunities to observe native wildlife, Lake Cowal’s focus is on birdwatching. This allows you to distinguish between different nature interests when planning your trip.
Water activities and practical information
Holland Park Pool has an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a waterslide and a hydro play area designed especially for children. If you’re travelling with children, this gives you a specific water activity to include in your plans; the pool, slide and play area also offer different ways to enjoy a stay by the water.
The West Wyalong Visitor Information Centre offers brochures and maps, as well as information about local events and attractions. Souvenirs and locally made products are also available there. An electric vehicle charging station is directly opposite the centre. If you’re still planning your outings, maps and information about events and attractions can help you find your way; the charging station is another useful stop for travellers with an electric vehicle.
The self-guided Heritage Walk and the first section of the Green Corridor, at about 5 kilometres long, offer different ways to explore: stops with stories on the one hand, and a route for walking, jogging or cycling on the other. If you also plan to enjoy nature or activities on the water, you can take these interests into account when looking for accommodation.
