A late Victorian-era railway station complex, a historic walking tour and a cottage built in Dalton in 1860 give Gunning a distinctive history. Art, exhibitions and occasional performances add to the cultural experiences, while south and west of the town, the Gunning Reserves offer a different focus. This makes it possible to discover Gunning through its local history and nature activities in the surrounding area.

The railway station and history in the townscape

The Gunning Railway Station complex and its grounds are among the best-preserved examples of a small rural railway station complex from the late Victorian era. Parts of it date from the opening of the railway line in 1875. Gunning is still a stop on the railway line between Sydney and Melbourne.

The self-guided Gunning Heritage Walk takes visitors to significant historic buildings and sights around town. It begins at the Post Office, built in 1881, and leads to more than 20 historic sites. This offers a distinct way to explore local history: rather than focusing on just one building, the walk leads to a series of stops around Gunning.

Museums, exhibitions and art

Connect at Gunning Station is located in the restored historic Gunning Railway Station. Visitors can explore changing exhibitions and heritage displays there. Creative workshops, cultural events and community gatherings are also on offer. The station thus brings together a historic setting and a place for a changing program of cultural activities.

The Pye Cottage Museum offers a different historical perspective. The original timber settler’s cottage was built in Dalton in 1860 and moved to Gunning in 1974. The Pye family donated it to the Gunning & District Historical Society. Visitors can view documents and artefacts from the pioneering era at the museum. The cottage’s history differs from the railway history of the station: it began in another place and led to its later relocation to Gunning.

The Picture House Gallery and Bookshop is located in the historic Art Deco Coronation Theatre building, which dates from around 1937. Original paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures and ceramics by artists from the region and other parts of Australia are for sale. Those interested in visual art will find a different facet of the cultural offering here than at the historic walking tours and museums.

The Picture House Theatre hosts occasional performances and events throughout the year featuring internationally renowned musicians. As no regular performance dates are specified, check whether a performance is scheduled for your travel dates.

Local history and nature in the surrounding area

Gunning can also be explored on two wheels: the 4 km “Sightseeing Gunning” cycling route takes in the main historic sights and the townscape. The Heritage Walk leads to more than 20 historic sites, while the cycling route has a specified distance and is designed for exploring by bike. Both focus on Gunning’s history and townscape, but in different ways.

For nature activities, the Gunning Reserves are located south and west of the town. This group includes Bango Nature Reserve, Oakdale Nature Reserve, McLeods Creek Nature Reserve and Belmount State Conservation Area. Low-impact recreational activities available there include walking, picnicking, cycling, bushwalking and bush camping.

If you are considering Gunning as a place to stay, you can plan your trip around the mix of cultural history in town and nature activities in the nearby reserves that you would like. This lets you decide which experiences matter most for your trip before looking for suitable hotels in Gunning.
