Oberon: Discover trails, museums and railway heritage
Accommodation in Oberon
Oberon can be explored in a variety of ways: along paved paths and walking trails, through railway history, and in museums with very different collections. The monthly Farmers Market also brings its own theme to your travel plans. Whichever of these aspects interests you most can give your stay a focus that suits you.
Trails around Oberon
The Oberon Tarana Heritage Rail Trail is a 6 km paved trail open to pedestrians and cyclists. If you want to plan your route using a specific distance, this provides a clear guide. Check trail and surface conditions before setting out.
At Lake View Walking Reserve, a walk of about 60 minutes follows trails alongside Lake Oberon. This offers a different kind of guidance from the Heritage Rail Trail: the walk has an approximate duration, while the trail is 6 km long. Check trail conditions and facilities at the reserve again before your trip.
Other routes offer different highlights. The signposted, scenic Oberon Northern Loop Walking and Cycling Trail starts at the Oberon Museum. The Oberon Township Southern Loop connects trails around Oberon with various parks, the Common, Lake Oberon and the golf course. You can choose between a route with a specified starting point and one that connects different places around Oberon.
Railway heritage and museums
Oberon railway station opened on 3 October 1923. Oberon Tarana Heritage Railway Inc. is dedicated to restoring the Oberon–Tarana railway line and to the goal of operating trains based on historical models.
The Oberon and District Museum brings together a focus on craftsmanship and a furnished historic house: the museum has a working blacksmith’s workshop and includes a furnished weatherboard house from Oberon dating to around 1887. The approximate date and furnishings give the house a character distinct from the workshop. Together, the exhibits appeal to different interests—from traditional craftsmanship to the history of a house.
The Oberon Military Museum displays weapons from the First World War to the present day. It is located at the corner of Oberon Street and Dudley Street. Those interested in military history will find a time span here that stretches from the early decades of the 20th century to the present day; the District Museum offers different areas of focus alongside it.
Plan a market visit and find accommodation
The monthly Oberon Farmers Market is held at the Oberon Showground and offers homemade and home-grown foods and produce. If these products are among your travel interests, plan your market visit for the right date and check the date before you arrive.
When looking for a hotel in Oberon, the focus you want for your stay can help guide your choice: Would you like to make time for the trails, explore railway and local history, or include a visit to the monthly market? These interests offer practical starting points for planning your trip, without requiring you to commit to just one activity.
