Millthorpe: Local History, Museum and Markets
Accommodation in Millthorpe
Millthorpe combines a heritage conservation area with a museum, historic walks, recreational activities and seasonal events. Its attractions appeal to a range of interests: you can explore local history in the streetscape and museum, spend time at Redmond Oval or plan your visit around a market or garden event. The focus of your trip is therefore a useful starting point for planning.
Historic Streets and Museum
Millthorpe’s historic streets have remained largely unchanged since the early 20th century. This means its history is reflected not only in a collection, but also in the streetscape. Visitors can join a guided historic walk through Millthorpe. For a self-guided walk, you can use the brochure The Millthorpe Walks or the flyer The Millthorpe Historic Interest Points. This gives you the choice of a guided experience or exploring at your own pace.
The Golden Memories Millthorpe Museum occupies a large complex of eight buildings and houses diverse collections. Visitors can view exhibitions, use audiovisual interactive displays and observe how machinery works. The museum also offers Spotto and treasure-hunt sheets for children.
Outdoor Recreation
Play and sport are the focus at Redmond Oval. The grounds include a playground, barbecue and picnic area, tennis courts, a basketball court, cricket nets, a skate park and a sports oval. There’s a range of options, from play and picnics to various sports. Unlike the historic walk, this is about outdoor recreation; the different facilities offer a variety of ways to spend time at the oval.
Gardens, Markets and Wine
At the annual Millthorpe Garden Ramble, visitors can tour gardens in the village. Gardens on nearby rural properties also open to visitors. The ramble takes place on the first weekend in November. The Millthorpe Markets are held twice a year, usually on the first Sunday in April and December. Stalls offer arts and crafts, woodwork, gourmet and fresh produce, plants and household goods. While open gardens are the focus of the Garden Ramble, a market day brings together food, crafts and household goods. Check the exact dates for your travel year, as both events are held on specific dates.
Wine is another way to experience Millthorpe. Tamburlaine Organic Wines’ cellar door is located in the historic village. Several other wineries with cellar doors are also within a short walk of one another, making it possible to enjoy a wine experience on foot through the historic village. Walking between several cellar doors offers a different way to explore the area than visiting a single museum or market. Which individual businesses are included may change.
If you’re looking for a hotel, consider whether you want to plan your stay around an event or focus on Millthorpe’s local history, walks and museum.
