On the southern edge of the Nandewar Ranges, Boggabri combines local history with routes through the town and an annual event in April. There is also a Tractor Shed with vintage machinery and nearby places of scenic and historical interest. You can shape your trip around the museum and heritage attractions, machinery history or the event dates, depending on your interests.

Museum and local history

At the Boggabri Historical Museum, you’ll find photographs, artefacts and local memorabilia about the town’s history. The museum also includes a restored old schoolhouse, reconstructed as a classroom from times past. The exhibition thus brings together objects relating to local history and a room depicting a classroom from an earlier era. The museum is open on Saturday mornings or by appointment. As opening hours may change, check visiting times in advance.

The self-guided Boggabri Heritage Walk takes you through the town; the accompanying brochures are available at the museum. You can explore the Boggabri Heritage Trail on foot through the central business district, learning the stories behind 31 local sites. The brochure accompanies you on the walk, while the trail focuses on the history of these 31 places. Together with the museum, the routes offer another way to engage with Boggabri’s history.

Tractors, tours and an April event

The Boggabri Tractor Shed is on the Kamilaroi Highway in Boggabri. Volunteers showcase an extensive collection of old tractors and machinery there. Volunteers also offer tours of the vehicles and equipment on display. The Tractor Shed offers a different focus from the museum and heritage attractions: it centres on historic agricultural machinery and its presentation by volunteers.

The Boggabri Drovers' Campfire takes place every year over the Anzac Day weekend in April. The event brings caravan travellers, motorhome travellers, campers, four-wheel drivers, ute owners and swaggies to Boggabri from all over Australia. If the Campfire is the reason for your trip, check the specific event dates for the year you plan to visit. This lets you plan your stay around the annual event rather than assuming it takes place on a fixed day in April.

Landscapes and nearby places

The Nandewar Ranges lie on the southern edge of Boggabri, giving the surrounding area a distinctive scenic character. Gins Leap, a prominent rock escarpment on the Kamilaroi Highway, is 5 km from Boggabri. It has a picnic area and an information sign, making it a place where the rock formation is complemented by a specifically noted visitor facility.

Nearby Barbers Lagoon is north of Boggabri on Manilla Road, after crossing the Iron Bridge. A sign there notes the approximate location of Clarke’s hut and cattle yards. Gins Leap and Barbers Lagoon thus offer different points of interest in the surrounding area: the former has a rock escarpment and picnic area, while the latter has a sign marking approximate historical locations.

The attractions also differ in terms of timing. The Drovers' Campfire is held over the Anzac Day weekend in April; the museum is open on Saturday mornings or by appointment. Check the specific event date and the museum’s current opening hours before planning your visit around them. To choose what to see, consider your travel group’s interests: local history and heritage attractions, tractors and machinery, or scenic and historical places nearby.
