Menah’s local history stretches from the original settlement and early public facilities to the history of its school. For visitors who enjoy tracing how place names and public facilities are reflected in history, specific historical references offer insight: a homestead, two notable trees and a school whose name changed over time. The Menah First World War Honor Roll was unveiled at Menah School on 6 December 1919 and is now at the Mudgee Museum.

Local history in clear chronological milestones

Menah was the original settlement. By 1833, at the latest, it had a police station and a gaol. These facilities mark an early period in the area’s history. Another point in time is Menah School: it opened in July 1883 and was renamed Wilbertree Flat School in 1941. The change from Menah to Wilbertree Flat is a distinct historical step, not the same event as the school’s opening. Early public facilities and a later school chronology thus sit side by side—two different perspectives on Menah’s past.

The act of remembrance also has a precise date. The Menah First World War Honor Roll was unveiled at Menah School on 6 December 1919. It commemorates former pupils of the school who enlisted for military service during the First World War. The honor roll is now at the Mudgee Museum. Two separate location references therefore matter: its historic unveiling in Menah and its later location at the museum.

Homestead and Notable Trees

Menah’s local heritage includes the homestead at Lot 1, DP 877564 (I406), Menah’s Explorers’ Tree (I407) and Menah’s River Red Gum (I408). The Explorers’ Tree, also called the “Camping Tree,” stands on Wilbertree Road beside the river; the River Red Gum is in the road reserve on the same road. The location references described for the two trees are therefore different: the river is associated with the Camping Tree, while the River Red Gum is associated with the road reserve. The homestead, in turn, is located by its lot reference.

These strands can be distinguished chronologically: the police station and gaol belong to the earliest dated period, while the school’s opening and renaming form a later sequence. The honor roll commemorates former pupils of Menah School; it was unveiled there on 6 December 1919. Its transfer to the Mudgee Museum also separates the historic site of its unveiling from its later location.
