Discover Wauchope: River, rainforest and culture
Accommodation in Wauchope
Wauchope lies on the Hastings River. There are several very different options to choose from when planning your trip: a loop through Gondwana rainforest, specific local attractions, and the market and art. Whether you’re mainly interested in a nature drive or want to plan individual experiences and dates can help you tailor your stay to your interests.
The Hastings Forest Way: rainforest and birdwatching
The Hastings Forest Way is a 122 km loop from Wauchope to Brushy Mountain and back. The route passes through ancient Gondwana rainforest; birdwatching is possible there, but sightings are not guaranteed. The loop is therefore outlined as an outing with a named destination and a return leg, while birdwatching remains a possible activity along the way. The combination of rainforest and the possibility of birdwatching gives nature lovers a specific focus for their outing. Before setting out, check current road and park conditions, as they can change.
Play area and wharf in town
Old Park Play Space is located in Old Park Reserve in Wauchope. It includes an inclusive swing for people with different abilities, as well as a dedicated path for scootering. These are two separate features to consider when planning: the swing for people with different abilities and a dedicated path for scootering. As facilities can change, check before your visit.
A public wharf is located at Jack Dwyer Reserve Wharf in Wauchope. This provides another specific location to visit, in addition to the activities at Old Park.
Art and market life
A community mural in Wauchope’s central business district was created through a collaboration between local artists and lead artist Jenny McCracken. Wauchope Community Arts Hall hosts exhibitions. These offer different cultural points of interest for trip planning: community-created art in the business district and exhibitions at the hall.
The Wauchope Farmers' Market is held on the fourth Saturday of each month from 8 am to 12 pm at the Wauchope Showgrounds. Local farmers bring fresh produce; the mix of vendors can change. If you want to include the market on a specific day of your trip, check the date and opening hours again before you travel. This lets you plan a visit for a specific Saturday morning and take a look at fresh produce from local farmers.
Note for planning your outing
A report dated 1 February 2026 states that the historic theme park Timbertown in Wauchope has closed its doors. Unless there is new official confirmation, you should not plan to visit it as an open attraction.
The route and the Farmers' Market offer different planning anchors: 122 km of driving on the one hand, and a recurring Saturday morning on the other.
