Glacier Experiences and Landforms
The Franz Josef Heli Hike combines a helicopter flight with a two-and-a-half-hour guided walk among blue ice formations. The Terrace Walk is an easy track along bush-covered terraces at the southern end of Franz Josef village. After dark, you can see glow-worms in the forest. Another way to get around on foot or by bike is the Te Ara a Waiau Walkway/Cycleway, which passes through bushland from Franz Josef to the Franz Josef Glacier car park.
Kiwi Stories and Special Experiences
At the West Coast Wildlife Centre, you can see live tuatara and ambassador penguins. You can also discover stories about New Zealand’s rare kiwis, including Haast tokoeka and rowi. The Centre is the South Island’s largest kiwi breeding and rearing facility. Check which exhibits are on display before you arrive.

Choosing the Right Pace for Your Day

The Roberts Point Track is close to the destination and starts at the glacier car park, about four kilometres from the village.
