Hokitika: Town History, Encounters and Craft
Accommodation in Hokitika
In Hokitika, distinctive town history, wildlife encounters and hands-on activities come together. The Memorial Clock Tower stands in the middle of the roundabout in the town centre; museums, a Heritage Trail and carving activities offer further ways to explore the townâs history and culture. When planning your trip, you can make Hokitika the focus or also consider other destinations in the wider Westland District.
History in the Heart of Town
The Memorial Clock Tower stands in the centre of Hokitika, in the middle of the roundabout at the intersection of Weld Street and Sewell Street. This distinctive landmark was built in 1902â1903. It commemorates the coronation of Edward VII, the dispatch of 130 men from Westland to the South African War, and four soldiers who fell there. At one place, it brings together a royal event, Westlandâs involvement and remembrance of those killed in war.
The Hokitika Heritage Trail is an easy route through Hokitika Town. You can join at the i-SITE, at the museum or at any point along the signposted trail, giving you flexibility to fit the walk into your stay. For a short nature stop, Glow-worm Dell is on State Highway 6 at the northern entrance to town. You can reach the Dell on foot from town; the path is 50 metres long, and the return walk takes five minutes. If you plan to visit after dark, check the conditions for doing so separately.
Museum, Wildlife and Hands-on Activities
The Westland Industrial Heritage Park is a working museum and a family-friendly tourist attraction in Hokitika. It offers exhibitions and experiences, as well as ongoing projects to restore Westlandâs industrial history for public display. At the National Kiwi Centre in the centre of Hokitika, visitors can see kiwis, tuatara, giant eels, crayfish and whitebait. Among other activities, they can take part in a catch-and-release pond experience.
At Bonz n Stonz, the focus is on creating something yourself: learn carving techniques, design a piece and take home a pounamu keepsake you made yourself. Hokitika Historic Walking Tours offers guided historical walks in the setting of The Luminaries, led by experienced guides. Group tours are adapted for all ages and abilities; confirm a tour separately.
