Waihi – Gold History and Discoveries
Accommodation in Waihi
Waihi’s gold history can be discovered in different ways: the Gold Story Tour at the Gold Discovery Centre explores the search for gold over three centuries. Another option is a guided tour that brings visitors close to modern mining—inside the security fence, in an area otherwise closed to the public.
Gold Mining: Past and Present
The Waihi Gold Mine Tours also show the process from ore extraction and crushing through to final processing. Routes and operating days may change; check tour availability and access requirements before you travel.
The Waihi Arts Centre and Museum also devotes several rooms to mining. The focus is on the history of underground mining, complemented by exhibitions on the town’s social history. A recreated underground tunnel brings the subject to life. A museum visit also includes a talk, hands-on activities and time to explore the exhibitions.
The Ghost Theatre at Waihi Gold Experience offers a different way to tell these stories. Using 3D holograms, it brings residents’ stories of love, conflict and social change to life. Waihi thus offers several ways to explore the past: a depiction of a centuries-long search for gold, a look at mining and personal stories of life in the town.
Town History and Cycling
On Seddon Street, you’ll find bronze statues, restored historic buildings and displays about Waihi’s heritage. Together with the museum exhibitions, the street offers another perspective on the town’s history—not just work underground, but life in the town, too.
If you’d like to include cycling in your stay, the Gold Discovery Centre has an isite Visitor Centre and Waihi Bicycle Hire for cycling on the Hauraki Rail Trail. You can therefore plan your trip around different interests: mining history, town history or an active time on your bike. If you want Waihi’s attractions to be the focus, you can choose Waihi as your hotel search location; for a trip that includes other places in the Hauraki District, it’s worth deciding on your preferred regional scope first.
In the wider Hauraki District destination
The Hauraki District stretches from the shellfish beaches of Kaiaua and Pūkorokoro/Miranda on the Firth of Thames in Tīkapa Moana (Hauraki Gulf) to the white-sand beaches of Whiritoa on the Pacific coast. Thousands of wading birds can be seen on the shellfish beds and tidal flats of Pūkorokoro; visibility depends on the tides.
The Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway is part of the region’s industrial and railway history. It follows the former railway line between Paeroa and Waihi and provides access to mining and railway heritage remains. The trail includes two steel truss bridges and a one-kilometre railway tunnel. Victoria Battery was built in Waikino between 1897 and 1898. Surviving features include ore-roasting furnaces, access tunnels and a site museum in the former transformer house.
