In Paeroa, river cruises, maritime history and an unusual drinks monument come together. These varied experiences offer a practical starting point for planning your trip: will you focus on the water and tides, the town’s history, or a section of the Hauraki Rail Trail?

Paeroa’s maritime history

Trips aboard the paddle steamer Tamati on the Waihou and Ohinemuri rivers are offered at the Historical Maritime Park and Museum. Departure times depend on the tides. There is also plenty to explore on land about Paeroa’s past as a port: the historic buildings of the Paeroa Historical Maritime Park house a significant collection on the town’s maritime history. Restored historic vessels and exhibitions add to the park, north of Paeroa.

The Band Rotunda in Paeroa Domain offers a different historical perspective. It is a Category 2 historic place. Anyone interested in local history will also find an extensive photographic exhibition and complete issues of the Paeroa Gazette from 1896 to 1996 at the Paeroa & District Historical Society Museum. The collections include more than 500 pieces of Royal Albert porcelain, Māori and European artefacts, and the Dufty Shell Collection.

River cruise and Hauraki Rail Trail

Paeroa also offers a practical starting point for planning a trail section: the Paeroa–Waihī section of the Hauraki Rail Trail is 24 kilometres long, takes about three hours and passes through the historic, scenic Karangahake Gorge. The Paeroa Historical Maritime Park is a stop along the trail. Visitors can leave their vehicles at the park and reach destinations by bike via the Hauraki Rail Trail.

The Tamati cruise and the trail section offer different experiences: tides determine the paddle steamer’s departure time, while the stated trail section has an approximate duration. This can help you decide whether to plan your trip around the river cruise or the roughly three-hour section.

A local landmark: the Giant L&P Bottle

The Giant L&P Bottle is a monument to L&P, a New Zealand soft drink originally made in Paeroa. At seven metres tall and 1.3 metres in diameter, it makes a striking subject for a stop in town. The drink’s history also leads back to Paeroa: Lemon and Paeroa was originally developed here using lemon juice and carbonated mineral water from the Paeroa Springs. The monument and the story of the drink make the town’s name tangible beyond its maritime past.

More perspectives in the Hauraki District

The Hauraki District stretches from the shellfish beaches of Kaiaua and Pūkorokoro/Miranda on the Firth of Thames in Tīkapa Moana (Hauraki Gulf) to the white-sand beaches of Whiritoa on the Pacific coast. Thousands of wading birds can be seen on the shell banks and tidal flats of Pūkorokoro; the tides affect how easily they can be spotted. This offers a different perspective on nature from the river and railway history that defines Paeroa and the Karangahake Gorge.

The Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway follows the former railway line between Paeroa and Waihi, providing access to remnants of mining and railway history. Features of the route include two steel truss bridges and a one-kilometre railway tunnel. This lets you consider adding a historic route with distinctive structures to your plans without confusing it with the Hauraki Rail Trail.

The Victoria Battery tells another chapter of industrial history. Built in 1897–1898, it retains features including ore kilns, access tunnels and a site museum in the former transformer house. Victoria Battery includes a tramway, a site museum, tours of underground kilns and a walkway above the ore kilns. Visitor experiences may vary depending on the operating schedule. On Waihi Gold Mine Tours, visitors see the process within the safety fence, from ore extraction and crushing to final processing. Booking and access arrangements may change, so check them before visiting.

When looking for a hotel in Paeroa, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: the maritime collection, a tide-dependent cruise or the Hauraki Rail Trail. If you also want to visit destinations in the Hauraki District, consider their locations and visitor conditions when choosing where to stay.
