Turangi offers a range of reasons to spend time outdoors: the Tongariro River Trail, Te Kapua Park in town and other destinations nearby. The trail is an easy, mostly flat and family-friendly route with several access points. It forms a 13.2 km loop and can be started at the Tūrangi i-SITE via an underpass. The endangered whio lives on the Tongariro River, which the trail follows. The river is also world-famous for fishing. This brings two different perspectives together on the same waterway: its value as a habitat and its significance for fishing.

From a riverside loop to a short walk to a swimming spot

For a different walk, the Rotopounamu Track car park is 11 km from Tūrangi on SH47. From there, a short walk of about 20 minutes leads to Ten Minute Beach. The spot is suitable for a picnic and is used for swimming in summer, when conditions are suitable. The two routes offer different options for planning your day: a 13.2 km loop along the Tongariro River or a short walk to a picnic and seasonal swimming spot. Whether swimming is a good idea depends on the conditions.

Te Kapua Park: sport, play and stories

At centrally located Te Kapua Park, sports and play facilities come together. There are tennis and basketball courts, as well as a skate park. The park also has an award-winning playground. Its design draws on stories of the surrounding rohe, including the Tongariro River and maunga that are significant to the people of Tūrangi. The playground thus connects a place to play with themes that are part of the cultural significance of the area.

Discover the Tongariro National Trout Centre

The Tongariro National Trout Centre is 4 km south of Tūrangi. Its facilities include a freshwater museum, an aquarium, a hatchery and an anglers' library. Visitors can feed wild trout or take part in a children's fishing day. Such a fishing day may be seasonal; check the date in advance if you would like to include it in your plans. Alongside its facilities, the centre also offers a direct connection to the trout fishing that shapes the Tongariro River.

Parking for the Tongariro River Trail is available off SH1, at the end of Koura Street and at the Tongariro National Trout Centre. Road and parking conditions may change, so check these details before setting off.

More to explore in the wider Waikato destination

The wider Waikato destination also offers experiences in its own right. Hamilton Gardens brings together 18 enclosed gardens inspired by gardens from around the world. You can explore them on a highlights tour or with an audio guide; both options are suitable for the whole family. The enclosed gardens open daily from 10 am, except on Christmas Day. Check opening hours before visiting.

Waikato is also home to Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari, whose forest is home to more than 730 native species, including kiwis and kākāpōs. The Moa Hunter experience there is an immersive cultural journey led by a Mana Whenua guide. These examples offer a different focus from Turangi's river trails and park facilities, broadening the picture of the variety across the wider Waikato destination.
