The Mōkai geothermal system is in the Waikato region, 20 km north of Taupō. In the area around Mokai, its natural features include warm and hot springs, mud pools, a rare mud geyser and fumaroles. This range of features gives Mokai a distinct connection to geothermal nature and makes it an interesting place if you are interested in geothermal landscapes.

The wider setting: Taupo District

The wider regional context of the Taupo District includes Tongariro National Park, one of New Zealand’s three World Heritage Sites. Its dual World Heritage status recognises significant Māori cultural and spiritual associations. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is also within this World Heritage area. Landscapes, cultural heritage and a well-known route come together in the same regional setting here—another emphasis from the geothermal features around Mokai.

The full Tongariro River Trail loop is 13.2 km long and can be started at the Tūrangi isite. The shared-use path is used by anglers, dog walkers and mountain bikers; cyclists must give way to pedestrians. When planning, both the length of the full loop and the shared use of the path are relevant.

The Great Lake Pathway starts at Taupo Boat Harbour. It is mostly flat and offers a family-friendly outdoor experience. The Great Lake Trails offer a different natural setting: they pass through lush native forest, past waterfalls and across deep gorges to the waters of Lake Taupō. A boat shuttle connects different sections of the Great Lake Trails, with pick-ups and drop-offs at several scenic bays along the route. If you plan to use the shuttle, check the current booking requirements in advance. The Pathway is a mostly flat, family-friendly ride, while the Trails take you through forest, waterfalls and gorge scenery.

The Taupo District’s waterscapes also show different sides. Lake Taupō is Australasia’s largest freshwater lake. At Huka Falls, nearly a quarter of a million litres of water per second plunge 11 metres through a natural gorge into the Waikato River; walking tracks run along both sides of the falls. The vast lake and the powerful flow at the falls offer different nature experiences in the surrounding region.

Another option in Tūrangi is the Tongariro National Trout Centre. Facilities there include a museum, a freshwater aquarium featuring native species, a historic trout hatchery and an underwater viewing chamber. A visit combines insights into freshwater species with several different exhibition and viewing areas.
