Tairua combines sheltered waters in the harbour with views of the coast. At the head of Tairua Harbour stands Paku, the twin-peaked mountain at the point where the estuary flows into the sea. Sheltered by the headland offshore, the harbour offers calm waters for sailing, kayaking and windsurfing. At Tairua's Ocean Beach, by contrast, surfing and swimming take centre stage. This contrast between harbour and beach gives you two distinct water experiences to choose from when planning your trip.

Harbour, Estuary and Paku

The Tairua Estuary invites you to enjoy gentle, peaceful walks. You can also experience nature here from different perspectives: almost 60 bird species can be found in, around and above the estuary. Paku provides a striking geographic landmark at the head of the harbour; the mountain and the estuary flowing out to sea mark the transition between sheltered waters and the coast.

If you prefer spending time at the beach, Ocean Beach offers opportunities for surfing and swimming. Check local conditions before swimming. Tairua brings together quieter walks along the estuary, activities in the sheltered harbour and beach experiences, so you don't have to limit yourself to just one kind of day on the water.

Boating, Walking and Practical Information

The Tairua Boat Ramp is on the western side of Tairua Harbour. The relatively large concrete facility is accessible at all tides and has two floating pontoons for loading and unloading. It is suitable for boats up to nine metres long. If you are planning a boat trip, be aware that fees, navigation conditions and access rules may change.

Another walking option, the Whenuakite Kauri Loop Walk, is about eight kilometres north of Tairua. The return walk takes approximately one hour and passes through a remnant stand of kauri trees. Check current track conditions before setting out. At Pepe Reserve, a new toilet block with eight toilets, including two accessible toilets, was completed in May 2021, replacing the former facility.

The Wider Setting: Thames-Coromandel District

The Thames-Coromandel District also offers a variety of landscapes: dramatic topography and coastline, native forests and diverse coastal settlements. The district has around 2,000 hectares of parks and protected areas. This regional perspective adds other nature and cultural experiences to Tairua's harbour and coastal character without treating the places as one and the same.

The Hauraki Rail Trail is 160 kilometres long and runs through the Thames-Coromandel, Hauraki and Matamata-Piako districts. A 34-kilometre section from Thames to Paeroa passes through lush farmland. The trail can be considered a cycling experience in its own right, while the experiences described in Tairua are shaped mainly by the harbour, estuary and beach.

In Thames is the Thames School of Mines complex. It is considered a nationally significant, rare and well-preserved example of its kind. The site has spiritual, cultural and archaeological significance and is especially important to Ngāti Maru. Also in Thames, the Band Rotunda in Victoria Park has been used for musical performances and related events for over a century. The Thames Pillar Boxes are in the centre of the town, an important historic settlement and visitor centre on the Coromandel Peninsula. Much of their surrounding area is part of the Grahamstown Historic Heritage Area designated in the proposed District Plan.

At Driving Creek near Coromandel Town, activities include train rides, ziplining, pottery classes and a park dedicated to protecting native nature. The railway travels through 60 acres of regenerating native bush to the EyeFull Tower Lookout, which offers sweeping views over Coromandel Town and the Hauraki Gulf. Operating and booking details may change, so check them before your visit. These regional examples add cycling, cultural and landscape experiences elsewhere in the district to the choice of Tairua's own water and nature activities.
