Hot Water Beach combines a Pacific beach with an unusual natural phenomenon: geothermal heat feeds natural hot pools right on the beach, and they are available year-round. Visitors can dig their own spa pool in the sand. The experience is also shaped by the rhythm of the tides: the water washes away the pools people have made. This creates not a permanent bathing pool, but a time-limited beach activity that brings nature and hands-on participation together.

Low tide sets the right moment

The hot springs are accessible only at low tide. The period of about two hours on either side of low tide generally offers a chance to dig your own pool. This window is a guide, not a fixed time for every visit, so check the tide table for your chosen day. If digging is the main goal, plan your beach visit around low tide. The fact that the incoming tide washes the pools away is also part of the experience: the sand pools are tied to the particular tidal period.

Spades for digging can be rented from Hotties Cafe, Hot Water Beach Cafe and Hot Water Beach Top 10 Holiday Park. Check before your trip whether they are available. This lets you factor in the equipment for your own sand pool without losing sight of the tidal window.

Pacific views and cultural context

The beach faces the Pacific and Castle Rock offshore. Pōhutukawa-lined cliffs frame the beach at both ends. You can take in the setting in three directions: towards the open sea, towards the offshore rock and along the vegetated cliffs. Alongside its geothermal pools, Hot Water Beach also offers a striking coastal landscape.

The cultural context is also important when visiting: the natural pools lie near an urupā and a pā. Ngāti Hei and the local community protect this taonga. Visitors should bear this context in mind and act respectfully.

Art, surf lessons and a beach visit

Moko Artspace showcases works by well over 100 artists; the number of participating artists may change. Another activity is offered by Te Puia Surf Co, with private one-on-one or group lessons in shortboard and longboard surfing. This means art and surf lessons offer different ways to spend your time alongside digging your own spa pool. Check the surf company's offerings again before your trip.

Choose accommodation to suit your stay

If your main goal is to enjoy your own sand pool, build the tides into your day plan. Surf lessons and a visit to Moko Artspace offer different points of focus. Compare specific hotels to find one that suits your needs.
