Onekaka offers several special reasons to visit: traces of an ambitious iron-mining and smelting project, golf on two courses, and music at The Mussel Inn. There are also historic remnants of transport and energy infrastructure. This lets you tailor your stay to a range of interests—from the history of technology to a round of golf, live music, or the seasonal hop harvest.

The Heritage of the Onekaka Ironworks

The Onekaka Ironworks Wharf and Tramline Piles are a Category 2 historic site at 75 Washbourn Road, Onekaka Inlet, Onekaka. The remains of Onekaka Wharf lie at the end of Washbourn Road, near The Mussel Inn. They recall an ambitious iron-mining and smelting project and are considered a rare reminder of its impact on the area.

The historical context also includes the Onekaka Ironworks Quarries and Hydro-electric Power Scheme, built in 1922 and 1929. It comprises a ten-metre-high concrete arch dam on the Onekaka River, a 1.25-kilometre penstock, and a power station with a Boving Pelton wheel. The former transport system was on a different scale: it consisted of a 365-metre pier and a 2.6-kilometre tramline from the wharf to the ironworks. Taken together, these measurements tell the story of the project’s different components—from energy supply to the transport of iron. The site has historical, technological, and archaeological significance.

Golf and Nature on the Course

Onekaka Links combines two distinct parts of the course: the original course and the Mountain Course. Together, they have 36 holes. Both courses are open year-round to green-fee players, weather and course conditions permitting. Bookings for groups of four or six players must be made two weeks in advance so the course can be prepared and a course guide arranged. If you would like to play in a group, allow for this lead time and confirm the conditions before your trip.

The natural setting is part of the course’s character. Seals or penguins, among other wildlife, may be spotted while you play. Such sightings are possible but not guaranteed; this adds another dimension to the golf course alongside its 36 holes and two distinct course sections.

Music and the Hop Harvest at The Mussel Inn

The Mussel Inn is a café, bar, and music venue in Onekaka. It regularly hosts live music and events featuring local and international artists. If an event fits your trip, check the dates for your travel period. This makes attending an event a possible focus for your plans, rather than a fixed part of every trip.

Another special feature is the old hop variety grown by The Mussel Inn brewery, which it calls “Onekaka.” The hops are harvested by hand in March, and guests can take part on harvest day. As this opportunity is seasonal, confirm your participation before your trip. Harvest day offers a specific seasonal reason to visit, while live music and events provide a different way to experience the area’s cultural life.

Boat Ramp: Keep the Tides in Mind

The Tasman District Council lists Onekaka as a location with a boat ramp or beach launch site. Significant tidal influences mean that access may depend on the tide and local knowledge. If you plan to launch a boat there, take these conditions into account as you prepare and make sure you have the necessary local knowledge.

Then compare the location descriptions for specific options with your main interests. This helps you tailor your search to the experiences you are interested in, rather than combining different activities into a single itinerary.
