Kaiteriteri Beach lies at the end of a small bay: a crescent-shaped sandy beach made of golden granite, framed by water and coastal scenery. The area combines beach days with short walks, longer tracks through bushland and activities on the water. You can tailor your stay to whether you mainly want to explore the coast or combine a range of activities.

Beach, Tides and a Green Backdrop

A rocky ridge and a tidal channel divide the continuous beach system of Kaiteriteri Beach into two parts. The beach slopes gently towards the sea and has a tidal inlet. At the estuary, a remnant strip of mature black beech forest provides a distinctive backdrop. The Kaiteriteri Recreation Reserve also brings together 250 hectares of lush native forest and the crystal-clear waters of Kaiteriteri Beach.

Walks and Cycling Routes

For a short outing, the Kaiteriteri Recreation Reserve has an easy, approximately 20-minute walking track to Little Kaiteriteri Beach. The southern end of Kaiteriteri Beach is also connected to Little Kaiteriteri by a track around the headland and a wooden staircase. The short, easy Kākā Pah Point Walk starts at the northern end of the main beach.

Withell’s Walk offers a different kind of walk: the 45-minute route leads through native bush, accompanied by birdsong and offering panoramic views. It is moderately steep and has rutted, uneven sections; it is not suitable for pushchairs. The One Step Beyond Walking Trail also passes through native bush, including protected wetlands. As track conditions can change, it is worth checking them before setting out.

Cyclists will also find a range of routes: Kaiteriteri Mountain Bike Park covers 180 hectares of mixed pine and native forest on the edge of the Kaiteriteri holiday settlement. It offers a wide selection of trails for different skill levels and includes a section of the Great Taste Cycle Trail. The 16-kilometre coastal section of the Great Taste Trail between Motueka and Kaiteriteri can be travelled on foot or by bike to Kaiteriteri.

Water Activities and Cultural Sites

The water in Kaiteriteri Bay is sheltered and naturally calm, making the bay suitable for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. Two areas at Kaiteriteri Beach are designated for swimming or other quiet beach activities. Check the beach-use rules again before your trip. Commercial water taxis operate between Kaiteriteri and Totaranui on the Abel Tasman coast. As booking and operating details can change, it is worth checking the latest information for your travel dates. Guided waka tours to Split Apple Rock are also recommended from Kaiteriteri; check operators and dates for your travel period.

Cultural heritage is also part of the area’s history. Kaka Point is a Wāhi Tapu, a historic settlement and burial site. Kaka Pah is culturally significant to Tangata Whenua, particularly the iwi of Ngāti Rārua and Te Ātiawa. Follow local protections when visiting.

Nelson as a Separate Cultural Highlight

Nelson is approximately 50 minutes by car from Kaiteriteri; traffic and road conditions may affect the journey time. If you would like to include urban history as well as the coast, you can plan Nelson as a separate stop. There you’ll find Founders Heritage Park, a recreated historic village from Nelson’s early period, roughly from 1880 to 1930. The park features historical displays, a railway, a café and working craftspeople. Nelson Provincial Museum Pupuri Taonga o Te Taiao is also located in the heart of Whakatū Nelson.

Choosing Accommodation for Your Itinerary

Check the location of the specific accommodation in relation to your planned day trips, and allow for the approximate driving time to Nelson. This helps you choose a base that suits the experiences most important to you on your trip.
