Joondalup offers several clearly distinct reasons to combine a trip with nature trails, mountain biking and culture. The defining feature is Yellagonga Regional Park: it stretches from Burns Beach Road in Joondalup south to Hepburn Avenue. Admission to the park is free. Rather than following a single must-do itinerary, you can shape your trip around the experiences that interest you most: a circuit around the lake, a longer hiking route, different mountain biking trails or culture with a regional connection. For families with different interests, this variety makes it easier to consciously choose a shared focus.

Hiking: a circuit or a one-way trail

The Lake Joondalup Circuit is 16 kilometres long, well maintained and family-friendly; it runs around the lake in the northern part of Yellagonga Regional Park. The Yaberoo Budjara Heritage Trail is 28 kilometres long, easy and designed as a one-way route, but can be walked in sections. This gives you two different types of route: a circuit around the lake and a longer trail that can be explored in sections. If a circular route is important to you, the Circuit fits the bill; if you want to tackle a longer hiking route in stages, the Heritage Trail offers a different approach. Its cultural connection lies in the movements of Yellagonga and his people between Lake Joondalup and Yanchep, which the trail follows. The choice of route thus combines a specific hiking experience with a cultural and historical perspective.

Mountain biking with different trail profiles

The biking options can also be compared using specific features. Sentry is a 707-metre-long blue cross-country mountain bike trail of intermediate difficulty. Winging It is 985 metres long, rated green and easy, and offers views of Lake Joondalup. Winging It is therefore the longer, yet easier-rated option; Sentry is shorter and of intermediate difficulty. Length and difficulty ratings describe different aspects of a trail. The Yalbunullup Mountain Bike Trails are considered family-friendly mountain biking trails in Joondalup. This offers families a distinct point of reference, while Sentry and Winging It can be distinguished by their respective lengths, ratings and views.

Culture: installation and art collection

An unusual cultural discovery is Joondakammer. The wooden cabinet is filled with specimens found in the Joondalup region; the installation also includes audio and video content. A description published on 1 August 2024 places Joondakammer on the lower floor of Joondalup Library. The object, regional finds and audiovisual elements come together in a single, specific work. The Joondalup Contemporary Art Gallery offers a different way to experience art: its annual program presents curated selections from the City of Joondalup's permanent art collection. This allows you to compare a single installation with a regional connection to a curated view of the collection.

Use experiences as a starting point for your accommodation search

First decide on your focus, then check the location of accommodation against the places you actually want to visit. This way, you can shape your search around the experiences that matter to your trip, rather than assessing every option by the same criteria.
