Nhill brings together water, outdoor activities, stories of aviation and local crafts. On a journey between Melbourne and Adelaide, the town is a stopover both on the road and along the railway line. You can choose different focuses for your stay: water activities at Nhill Lake, walking trails, a visit to a park, or insights into aviation and culture. This gives you practical starting points for planning, rather than limiting your stay to just one kind of experience.

Water and walking trails at Nhill Lake

Nhill Lake has water year-round. Fishing, waterskiing and swimming are among the activities at the lake, offering different ways to spend time by the water. If you don’t want to focus your stay solely on water activities, there are also walking trails in the Nhill Lake area. These include a loop around the lake and connections to Victoria Street and Jaypex Park. The loop and the links to these two landmarks provide different settings for a walk. Nhill Lake therefore offers a choice of both on-water activities and walking trails.

Parkrun and literary history at Jaypex Park

Nhill hosts a Parkrun every Saturday morning at 8 am in Jaypex Park. If you’d like to include this event in your stay, check the details before your visit. The same park is home to the John Shaw Neilson Cottage. It reconstructs the two original rooms of the house where poet John Shaw Neilson, who lived in Nhill, was born. Parkrun and the cottage offer two different ways to include the park in your travel plans: a recurring event and a place connected to Nhill’s literary history.

Aviation and local collections

The Nhill Aviation Heritage Centre is located at the original site of a RAAF training base. It displays five aircraft, including an almost completely preserved Avro Anson, a rebuilt Wirraway, an airworthy Tiger Moth and a rare deSoutter. The different descriptions illustrate the range of the collection: they refer, for example, to the condition, reconstruction or airworthiness of individual aircraft. The centre also houses an original Second World War Link Trainer flight simulator. As individual exhibits may change, check which aircraft are currently on display before your visit.

Art and crafts are also part of Nhill’s cultural offerings. Centrally located Gallery Central displays and sells works by local artists and craftspeople. Paw Po Products, on Nhill’s main street, sells traditional handwoven Karen textiles, including aprons, oven mitts, bags, scarves and table runners. Visitors can watch women sewing and weaving there and read their stories on information panels. Gallery Central and Paw Po Products offer different focuses: one centres on local art and crafts, while the other showcases traditional Karen weaving and insights into how it is made.
