Cape Bridgewater combines striking coastal scenery with a range of ways to get outdoors. You can focus on beach activities, choose a section of the Great South West Walk, or explore the seal colony and the Petrified Forest. The destinations differ in their focus and stated distances—helpful guidance when considering what you would like your days on the coast to look like.

Sandy beach and beach days

The bay at Cape Bridgewater includes a wide, 4 km sandy beach. At Bridgewater Beach, you can swim, walk and surf. This gives you a choice of different ways to enjoy the beach, from spending time by the water to getting active along the coast.

Bridgewater Bay Beach has seasonal patrols by the local Surf Lifesaving Club. They take place on weekends and public holidays from the first weekend in December until Easter, each day from 10 am to 5 pm. If you are relying on these times for your visit, check them locally before making plans.

Walking trails with different destinations

The Great South West Walk offers an easy 18 km route from Cape Bridgewater to Bridgewater Lakes. The trail passes seal colonies, the Petrified Forest, blowholes and springs. This route option therefore connects several coastal and natural attractions; its stated endpoints also give you clear guidance for planning.

A section of the Great South West Walk runs from Springs Camping Area to Trewalla Camping Area and to Victoria’s highest coastal cliffs. This describes a section with different stated endpoints from the 18 km route to Bridgewater Lakes. When choosing a route, it is therefore helpful to pay close attention to the particular trail and its destination. Conditions on the trails can vary.

Fur seals at Cape Bridgewater

The seal colony at Cape Bridgewater is a significant feature of Discovery Bay Coastal Park. There are two differently described routes for seeing the fur seals: the Cape Bridgewater Trail ends at a lookout platform with views of a colony of Australian and New Zealand fur seals. The Seal Colony Walk follows the eastern coast of Cape Bridgewater to a seal colony of up to 2,500 animals of these two species. The number can vary; wildlife sightings are not guaranteed.

The difference is in the described route and destination: the lookout platform is the endpoint of the Cape Bridgewater Trail, while the Seal Colony Walk follows the eastern coast. Both direct your attention to the fur seal colony, but neither guarantees a reliable wildlife sighting.

The Petrified Forest

The Petrified Forest is easily accessible from the car park at the end of Blowholes Road in Cape Bridgewater. The car park is therefore a specific landmark for your visit. Conditions on the trail and at the car park can change; check them before your visit.

What you want your stay to be about

When looking for a hotel in Cape Bridgewater, you can first decide which experiences matter most for your trip: beach activities, a particular walking route or the fur seal colony. The route details and destinations help you distinguish between the walking options; the seasonal schedule is relevant if you are visiting with the Bridgewater Bay Beach patrols in mind.
