Corinella is surrounded by the Corinella Foreshore Reserve. Coastal cliffs and native vegetation shape the landscape; the reserve also includes four geological formations of state significance. Lookouts, foreshore walks and historic sites reveal different sides of the town.

Coastal Walks and Wildlife

More than five kilometres of walking trails run along the shoreline in the Corinella Foreshore Reserve. They offer the chance to experience the seascape, the area’s varied landscape, and its natural flora and fauna. The Corinella Foreshore Walk offers views across the expansive tidal bay. The Corinella Walk lookout at Settlement Point offers views of the cliffs and coastline of Western Port, as well as nearby French Island. The Corinella Rotunda offers another perspective: this sheltered lookout faces across Western Port to French Island, west along the coast to Settlement Point, and east across Pioneer Bay.

Wildlife can also be found at specific locations. Native mammals, marsupials, birds and reptiles live in the Foreshore Reserve; wading birds include herons and cormorants. Little pied cormorants can be seen in groups on the rocky outcrops along the Corinella Foreshore. Swans and other waterbirds live along the Corinella Foreshore Walk. A mangrove fringe is regenerating on the reserve’s north coast. The trails bring together coastal scenery, vegetation and several distinct wildlife-watching opportunities.

Local History Along the Trail and at the Jetty

The Corinella History Trail starts in Harold Hughes Reserve in the town centre. There is also a playground there, a practical point of reference for families with children. Another historical connection reaches back to Victoria’s early history: Corinella claims to have been home to Victoria’s first Government House. The trail, reserve and this claim each give the town centre a distinct historical or practical connection.

By the water, Corinella Jetty represents another facet of the town. The historic jetty has been associated with commercial and recreational fishing for more than a century. It also offers views of Western Port and French Island. Recreational boats can use the jetty’s berths for short stays. The foreshore area in front of the jetty has ample parking, a boat ramp and a beach. The views, fishing history and practical facilities by the water offer different reasons to visit.

Water Access and Practical Information

Corinella has four deep-water boat ramps that are accessible at all tide levels. However, caution is advised at low to very low tide. If you are planning a visit to the water, keep this tide advisory in mind as you make your plans. The information that the ramps are accessible at all tide levels does not override the explicit caution about very low water levels.

At Settlement Point, a completed staircase with a floating pontoon provides walkers and shore-based anglers with access to the foot of the cliff. Its completion was reported in the community archive in 2023. Check current conditions on site and signage before visiting.

The Foreshore Walk, Jetty and History Trail provide concrete points of interest. You can use them to decide which of these landscape and history experiences matter for your trip to Corinella.
