Rutherglen combines a long-standing wine region with cycling trails, river and lake scenery, and a tangible gold-mining history. Along the Rutherglen Loops, historic cellar doors, the mighty Murray River and Lake Moodemere line the route; notable sites also recall the gold rush. You can shape your stay around different interests: wine and scenery are as much a part of the destination as the history of its attractions. You can give these different themes varying emphasis in your own travel plans.

Wine Heritage and Encounters

Since the early 19th century, Rutherglen has produced fortified wines, full-bodied reds and fresh whites. This variety gives the region a wine profile that goes beyond any single style. At Rutherglen’s modern cellar doors, you can meet winemakers from the fourth and fifth generations. A long history of production thus sits alongside the chance to meet winemakers today: here, you can explore wine through its different styles as well as through the people you may encounter at the cellar doors. You can make wine the focus of your trip or combine it with the cycling trails and the town’s cultural history.

Cycling Trails with Different Highlights

The Rutherglen Loops pass historic cellar doors, the Murray River and Lake Moodemere; the trail network extends for 48 kilometres. The Muscat Trail passes river red gums and remote billabongs and reaches ten local wineries. Orchards, wineries and cafés line the Pedal to Produce Cycle Trail. Each route has a different focus: the Loops pair river and lake scenery with cellar doors, the Muscat Trail connects wineries with the scenery along the route, and Pedal to Produce adds orchards and cafés to the wine theme. When choosing a route, consider which of these experiences you’d like to shape your ride.

Gold History and Art

The Rutherglen Gold Battery was built to crush quartz from nearby reefs and release the gold it contained. Restored in 2011–12, the site uses information panels and video presentations to show the hard work involved in gold processing in the early 20th century. You’ll need an access code from the Rutherglen Wine Experience and Visitor Information Centre to enter; arrange this before your visit.

Another cultural aspect is the Aboriginal Exhibitions Gallery at De Bortoli Rutherglen Estate. Its collection includes more than 700 paintings, prints, artefacts and sculptures. The two cultural attractions have distinct focuses: the gallery showcases artworks and artefacts, while the Gold Battery highlights the technology and labour involved in gold processing. Alongside wine and scenery, they offer another perspective on Rutherglen.

A Landmark with a Story of Its Own

The historic water tower dates from 1900 and is now known as “The Wine Bottle”. It originally held 72,000 gallons of water. This landmark brings together a tangible technical past and an unusual name used today. The Wine Bottle also serves as a picnic or rest stop for walkers and cyclists. It is therefore not only part of Rutherglen’s history but also one of the suggested stops for exploring on foot or by bike.
