Buninyong brings together garden culture, local history and trails through bushland for a variety of reasons to visit. Self-guided tours are a highlight at the Buninyong Botanic Gardens, while Union Jack Reserve has two signposted walks. There are also circuits with stated walking times and the Buninyong Walk to the summit of Mt Buninyong. As you plan, consider whether to focus on gardens and historic buildings, a shorter circuit or a longer hike.

Gardens and historic traces

The Buninyong Botanic Gardens were established in the 1860s and are listed by Heritage Victoria. The well-maintained visitor resource Garden Explorer provides information about self-guided historical, educational, botanical and seasonal tours. The different themes give a garden visit a range of possible focuses: you can explore history or botany, or choose educational and seasonal content.

The town's buildings also tell stories of its past. Buninyong has 19th-century buildings, some of which date back to the early gold rush. In early 2013, the Buninyong & District Historical Society and the Buninyong & District Community Association installed a series of plaques on historic buildings explaining their historical significance. This means you can encounter historical themes both in the gardens and at individual buildings; the plaques supplement the buildings' dates with explanations of their significance.

Walks through bushland and along Union Jack Creek

On the northeastern side of Buninyong lies the 72-hectare Union Jack Reserve, a bushland area with two signposted, self-guided walks. The longer walk includes the Locomotive Mine. This gives the route a specific point of interest, while the reserve itself offers a different focus from the themed tours in the Botanic Gardens, with its size and bushland setting.

In Desoza Park, a flat gravel path runs along both sides of Union Jack Creek, forming an easy circuit. It is suitable for strollers, wheelchairs and bicycles. The circuit in De Soza Park is 3.7 kilometres long, with an estimated walking time of about 1 hour and 10 minutes and a Grade 1 rating. Its length and approximate duration provide a concrete timeframe for planning a circuit. As track conditions can change, check them before setting out.

From a circuit to the summit

The Mt Buninyong Circuit is 11.5 kilometres long, with an estimated walking time of 3 hours and 30 minutes. It starts and ends in Buninyong. Compared with the circuit in De Soza Park, this is a longer route with a correspondingly longer estimated walking time. The Buninyong Walk starts at the eastern end of The Gong and leads to the summit of Mt Buninyong. It forms part of the Wallaby Track section of the Goldfields Track. For the circuit, the route and estimated walking time provide a concrete timeframe; for the Buninyong Walk, its starting point, summit destination and place in the track section are defining features.

If you are looking for a hotel for your trip to Buninyong, first decide which experiences you want to shape your daily plans: gardens and local history, or one of the walks described here. The stated route lengths and walking times help you gauge the time involved in individual routes; the destinations mentioned provide further guidance for planning.
