Queens Domain in Hobart brings together botanical highlights, native grasslands and a place of remembrance. There are paths for different activities, so you can plan your trip around the things that interest you most: plants, history or outdoor activities.

Nature between garden, grassland and summit

The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens offer the chance to experience Tasmania’s native flora across an accessible 14-hectare site. The gardens include the unique Subantarctic Plant House. The native grasslands of Queens Domain offer a different perspective on plant life and are rich in rare and endangered native plant species.

The two natural highlights have different emphases: in the gardens, you can experience Tasmania’s native flora across an accessible site, while the grasslands stand out for their abundance of rare and endangered species. From the summit area, you can also enjoy views of Hobart, the River Derwent and kunanyi / Mt Wellington. Here, the perspective shifts from plants to city, river and mountain.

A memorial site with ties to Hobart

Soldiers Memorial Avenue commemorates men and one woman from Hobart, or with family connections to Hobart, who fell in action during the First World War or died as a result of wounds, illness, epidemic disease or accidents. The avenue is located within Queens Domain and invites visitors to reflect on the stories, lives and sacrifices of those who did not return from the war. It is also listed on the Tasmanian Heritage Register. The memorial site therefore offers a different focus from the gardens and grasslands: its focus is on people and their stories.

Walking and cycling routes

The Maxs Infinity Loop is a multi-use track for running, walking and cycling. It passes through bushland around the summit of Queens Domain in Hobart. One half has a cushioning bark surface, while the other has an asphalt surface. Both the surroundings and the change in surface are defining features of this route.

The Intercity Cycleway begins at the Cenotaph on McVilly Drive in Queens Domain and serves as a shared route for commuters, recreational cyclists and other people taking part in recreational sports. Along its route, it is connected to barbecue areas, outdoor fitness equipment, picnic tables, recreation areas, seating, shelters and walking paths. The routes therefore have different features: the Maxs Infinity Loop offers bushland and changing surfaces, while the Cycleway provides a shared connection and accompanying recreational facilities.
