Discover Copping: collection history and regional experiences
Accommodation in Copping
Copping combines an unusual collection history with regional experiences. The Copping Convict & Colonial Collection is located halfway between Hobart and Port Arthur. In the surrounding area, options range from historical traces on a three-hour circuit walk to animal encounters at the Bream Creek Show. This brings together a cultural focus in Copping and a variety of excursion options.
Collection History and Cultural Heritage
The Collection began as a garage and is associated with memorabilia and inventions. From November 2011, it was revitalised by the local business Vines and Designs, with a focus on highlighting local creativity and talent. The collection's story thus combines an unusual beginning with a later emphasis on regional creative skill.
Another cultural landmark is St Paul's Anglican Church in Copping. It is permanently listed in the Tasmanian Heritage Register under number 5.325. The Collection and the church offer different cultural points of interest: the collection's origins and renewal are its defining features, while the church is distinguished by its permanent register listing.
Experiences in the Surrounding Area
Near Copping, the Jack Smith Working Models are permanently on display in the wool pavilion at the Bream Creek Show. The models were originally part of the Copping Museum. At the Bream Creek Show, children and adults can meet and interact with various animals in the Animal Nursery.
At the Bream Creek Show grounds, the Bream Creek Farmers Market showcases producers, chefs, brewers and craftspeople from southeast Tasmania and beyond. This gives the market a different focus from the Collection: the emphasis is on regional people, food and crafts. If you plan to visit the market or the show, check the respective dates in advance.
Wielangta: Circuit Walk and Road Connection
In Wielangta, a three-hour circuit walk passes the remains of a once-thriving sawmill town. It follows an abandoned tramway to the site of the former settlement of Wielangta. Check trail conditions before setting out.
The Wielangta Forest Drive lies between Orford and Copping and offers an alternative route between Tasmania's East Coast and the Tasman Peninsula. It is therefore a different regional option from the circuit walk: a road connection between two parts of the state rather than a three-hour loop to historical remains and the site of a former settlement. Check road conditions separately.
Choose Accommodation to Suit Your Travel Plans
The Animal Nursery offers children and adults the chance to get close to various animals; the three-hour Wielangta circuit walk involves a different time commitment, while the Forest Drive provides a regional connection between the East Coast and the peninsula. Would you rather plan a visit to the show, a longer walk to historical sites, or a regional drive? This decision can help you match your stay and choice of hotel or other accommodation to the experiences that matter to you.
