On the shores of Lake Rosebery, Tullah combines a waterside landscape with local history and outdoor activities. The lake is a reservoir created in 1983. There are several ways to shape your stay: launch a boat, experience a seasonal steam railway or plan a several-hour hike up Mt Farrell. This lets you discover Tullah through its water, engineering history and outdoor activities, rather than focusing your trip on just one kind of outing.

At Lake Rosebery

At Tullah, Lake Rosebery has a concrete boat ramp and jetty where visitors can launch boats. Kayaking and canoeing are also ways to explore Lake Rosebery. Water levels and safety conditions can change, so check both before launching or setting out on a paddle. The lake offers different ways to spend time on the water, but local conditions remain important when planning.

Local history and seasonal steam railway

Tullah was once a mining town and was redeveloped as a hydro village. This change adds a local historical context to the reservoir landscape. The Wee Georgie Wood Steam Railway runs a 1924 steam locomotive on scheduled weekends during the summer season. As the service is seasonal and operates on weekends, check the current timetable before travelling if you plan to take the train. The West Coast Visitor Guide 2025 lists the Heritage Park as an attraction in Tullah; facilities and interpretation on site may change.

Mt Farrell and Sterling Valley

The Mt Farrell Track trailhead is on the main road, directly opposite the Wee Georgie Wood Steam Railway; there is some parking there. The hike takes about four hours and is 4.3 kilometres each way. The track is rated moderate to difficult. There are some steep and rough sections around the ridge, and weather can change track conditions. When planning, consider not only the walking time but also the rating and the sections described. Check conditions before setting out.

For a different kind of tour, head to the wider region: Sterling Valley lies in the area between Tullah and Rosebery. This remote, one-way route is a challenging mountain bike ride through myrtle rainforest. The two destinations therefore differ both in activity and location: the Mt Farrell Track starts in Tullah, while Sterling Valley is in the wider area. Conditions can change there too, so check them before setting out.

Practical information and finding a hotel

Tullah Village’s public toilets are on Farrell Street, near the stadium. They are open from 7 am to 7 pm; access from 7 pm to 7 am is available through the Unlock West Coast app. Opening hours and access may change, so check the latest information locally.

When looking for a hotel in Tullah, your preferred pace of travel is a useful starting point. Would you like to centre your stay on water activities and the seasonal railway weekends, or set aside time for the approximately four-hour hike? The timetable, water conditions and walking time each shape your plans differently.
