Discover Warren: Wetlands, art and history
Accommodation in Warren
Warren brings together wetlands, public art and local history. On the edge of town, on Coonamble Road, lie the Tiger Bay Wetlands: a natural overflow of the Macquarie River system, home to numerous bird species and aquatic plants. You can take a self-guided walk there. If you’d like to combine nature and glimpses of the town in one stay, Warren offers different ways to plan your day.
Explore wetlands and river ecosystems
Educational displays at the Window on the Wetlands Centre explain complex wetland and river ecosystems. Visitors can also learn about the history of Warren or the internationally recognised Macquarie Marshes. The topics range from the natural environment to the history of the town. The Warren Shire Visitor Information Centre is located on the Centre’s grounds at 2 Coonamble Road on the Oxley Highway in Warren NSW.
Beemunnel is also close to Warren. This significant cultural site is a place where Aboriginal families lived in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. An interpretive trail is located 1.5 km past the Window on the Wetlands Centre on the Oxley Highway. This site and the walk in the Tiger Bay Wetlands offer different points of interest if you’re interested in nature and cultural history.
Art and history in town
Take a walk through Warren to discover numerous murals, sculptures and art on the water tower. The public art offers a distinctive way to experience the town. Another way to explore local history is at the Warren Museum and Art Gallery, housed in a restored historic building at 142 Dubbo Street.
The Warren Historical and Family History Society offers free guided walks by appointment. If you’d like to include this experience in your plans, confirm your appointment before travelling. This will help you schedule a possible guided walk separately from a self-guided stroll or a visit to the exhibitions.
More options for your plans
Sport, fishing and events may also help you choose what to do. The Warren Golf Club has an 18-hole course with a mix of grass and sand greens. As playing conditions can change, it’s a good idea to check them before your visit. The Warren Showground/Racecourse hosts numerous events throughout the year, including horse racing, the Warren Show and polocrosse. If a particular event is central to your stay, check the relevant dates before travelling.
Fishing spots around Warren include Bob Christensen Reserve and Bryan Egan Weir. There’s a boat ramp and picnic tables there; the listed fishing spots are within 5 km of Warren. The Window on the Wetlands Centre also offers a historic church dating from around 1896 for hire. Nature, local history, sport and events each offer a different focus for a stay.
