Potts Point offers several distinct ways to explore its history: a green space in the heart of Kings Cross, memorials to the world wars, and a Regency mansion from the early colonial period. Fitzroy Gardens brings a fountain and playground into view, while Tusculum illustrates 19th-century architecture and urban planning. There is also a two-hour walking tour of Potts Point. If you’re planning a trip, you can consider whether green spaces, remembrance or historic architecture most appeals to you.

Gardens and Memorials

Fitzroy Gardens in Potts Point is a green space in the heart of Kings Cross. It includes a paved plaza with the El Alamein Fountain and a fenced playground. The plaza and play area are specific features of the grounds alongside the fountain. If you’re travelling with children, the fenced playground is useful information about the park’s layout that you can factor into your expectations of the green space.

The modernist design of the El Alamein Fountain recalls a large water dandelion above four terraced pools. At the same time, the fountain commemorates the 9th Division of the Australian Imperial Forces in the Second World War. Its striking form and clearly defined commemoration come together: the fountain is both a work of design and a memorial.

Another historical connection can be found at the First World War Troop Embarkation Memorial in Embarkation Park, Potts Point. It was erected in 1921 and taken over by the municipal council in 1934. The inscription recalls the departure point for the soldiers who passed through the opposite gates for the Great War of 1914–1918, as well as the Centre for Soldiers’ Wives and Mothers NSW. The dates and the inscription’s content give the memorial a specific historical context. Compared with the El Alamein Fountain, its connection dates to an earlier period; moreover, the inscription names an organisation as well as the soldiers.

Tusculum and Villa Architecture

The two-storey Regency mansion Tusculum was designed by John Verge and built between 1831 and 1835. Verge designed it for businessman A.B. Spark. Tusculum was one of the first villas on Woolloomooloo Hill and part of a colonial government initiative in the 1830s to create a prestigious neighbourhood for the social elite there. Its architecture and origins therefore tell the story not only of an individual villa but also of an intended social ambition.

William Grant Broughton used Tusculum as his residence during almost his entire tenure. He was Australia’s first bishop from 1836 to 1847 and Bishop of Sydney from 1847 to 1852. This biographical connection complements the building’s history with that of one of its residents and links the villa to the ecclesiastical history of Australia.

Tusculum has close historical and architectural connections to its contemporary neighbour, Rockwall, which was also designed by John Verge. Both are among the few surviving colonial villas. Their contemporary proximity and shared architect provide a concrete basis for comparison; at the same time, both houses are part of a rare surviving built heritage.

Experience Potts Point and Plan Your Trip

A two-hour walking tour of Potts Point with a trained volunteer tour guide from the Australian Architecture Association offers another way to explore the area. The guided walk differs from exploring individual buildings and gives you a specific time frame for planning your day. If you’d like to take part, check in advance for a suitable date.

When choosing a hotel, you can first consider which of these themes you’d most like to shape your stay: the design of Fitzroy Gardens, the memories of the two world wars, or the architectural history around Tusculum and Rockwall. This way, you can focus your accommodation search on what you’d like to discover in Potts Point, rather than choosing based on just one landmark.
