Parramatta City includes historic residential and administrative buildings, Indigenous traces in the landscape, architecture and paths along waterways. Parramatta Park brings together several of these themes, while self-guided routes each have their own focus. If you’re looking for accommodation, it’s best to start by asking which experiences you want to shape your days. You can then choose a hotel location to suit your personal itinerary.

Parramatta City

History and landscape in Parramatta

Old Government House in Parramatta Park was built around 1799 and extended in 1815. From the early days, the house was connected with the administration of the colony. Hambledon Cottage has a different historical connection: it was built in 1824 as a second residence on John Macarthur’s Elizabeth Farm Estate in Parramatta. Together, the two buildings represent different aspects of early colonial history: administration and domestic life.

The Philip Ruddock Heritage Centre at 45 Macquarie Street is a curated museum about life in the early colonial period. The Dairy Precinct in Parramatta Park features an exhibition space, digital displays and landscaped areas; the precinct is listed as a World Heritage site. Tours can be arranged for groups of up to 15 participants by emailing education@cityofparramatta.nsw.gov.au.

Parramatta Park also tells another story: it contains preserved Indigenous plantings and scarred trees associated with traditional land use. These landscape features offer a distinct focus alongside the colonial buildings. If you’re interested in the park’s cultural heritage, you can include both historic buildings and traces of traditional land use in your travel plans.

Choose trails by theme and distance

The Harris Park Heritage Trail is a self-guided, 2.4-kilometre route. It starts at Parramatta Wharf and follows the river east to Harris Park. The Parramatta Heritage Architecture audio tour is also self-guided, but focuses on the city’s architectural treasures, their stories and architectural features. This lets you choose between a route with a specified length and course, and a walk focused on architecture.

The Governor Phillip Walk focuses on the area’s historic landscape: it passes through some of Australia’s oldest government lands. The Parramatta River Walk ends in Parramatta, at the confluence of Toongabbie Creek and Darling Mills Creek. The Great West Walk covers a greater distance: this 65-kilometre walking trail runs from Parramatta Park to the foothills of the Blue Mountains. Compared with the 2.4-kilometre Harris Park Heritage Trail, the difference between the stated distances is clear; the trails offer different ways to include physical activity in your trip.

River, city culture and choosing accommodation

You can also plan around city culture and riverside scenery as interests in their own right. Riverside Theatres is located on the banks of the Parramatta River. PHIVE at 5 Parramatta Square occupies the original, heritage-listed Parramatta Town Hall. A free tour of PHIVE is offered at 5 Parramatta Square in the heart of Parramatta’s Central Business District. Weekly farmers’ markets are now held around Parramatta Town Hall.

You can then compare the location of a particular accommodation option with your daily itinerary. For a family trip, you could organise outings around everyone’s shared interests and vary the mix of cultural and walking experiences, without assuming that every traveller wants to go at the same pace.
