Discover Molong: History, Crafts and Historic Places
Accommodation in Molong
Molong brings together a historic streetscape and stories that come to life in different places: in the town’s buildings, the museum, Fairbridge Children's Park and the local arts and crafts scene. If you’re considering which accommodation suits your trip, you can start by choosing the experiences you want to shape your stay—architecture and local history, connections to Fairbridge or a visit to the market.
Historic Streets and Notable Buildings
Molong’s heritage-listed main street and many well-preserved historic buildings invite you to explore the town’s architectural history on foot. The individual buildings belong to quite different chapters of that history: Molong Historical Museum is housed in a building constructed in 1856 as the Golden Fleece Hotel. The railway left another visible mark on the town’s history. Molong Railway Station and its associated yard group are important visual features of Molong’s historic character.
The Banjo Paterson Trail also passes through Molong. The town is associated with its colonial heritage, historic buildings along the streets and stories of early settlement. Together, the main street, museum building and railway group offer not just one perspective on the past, but a range of different historic traces throughout the town.
Fairbridge Farm: Park and Museum
Fairbridge Farm has a special connection to Molong in two forms. Fairbridge Children's Park opened in 2020 on land that was part of the original Fairbridge Farm. Its four themed areas are connected by a central path. This layout differs from Molong’s historic buildings and streets: here, the focus is on the park’s themed areas and how they connect.
Molong Historical Museum also has an exhibition about Fairbridge Farm. If you’d like to include this exhibition in your plans, check before your visit whether it will be on display. The park and museum thus offer different ways to engage with the same subject: the place where part of the original farm stood, and an exhibition about the farm’s history.
A Historic Site Southeast of Molong
Yuranigh's Aboriginal Grave is about three kilometres southeast of Molong. The historic site is of state significance, in part because of its connections to the exploration of inland Australia and the evidence it provides of significant positive contact between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people during the colonial period. The site therefore broadens the focus beyond Molong’s architecture to include a history shaped by encounters during the colonial period. Check access conditions before setting out.
Arts, Crafts and Market Days
The historic Molong Yarn Market is on Bank Street and has been operating for more than 40 years. It offers craft supplies and gift ideas from local producers, artists and craftspeople. This offers a different way to experience Molong than its historic buildings: the focus is on craft materials and the work of local makers. As current trading details may change, it’s a good idea to check in advance whether the shop will be open on the date of your visit.
The Molong Village Markets are held annually in April, June and October. If you’d like a market visit to shape your stay, check the exact dates before you travel. This lets you plan your trip around a market day that suits you, without assuming a specific date for any of the three months mentioned.
When looking for accommodation in Molong, your personal interests can be a helpful guide: would you mainly like to explore the historic streetscape, learn about the history of Fairbridge Farm, or include crafts and market days? These different themes offer different reasons to explore Molong and can help you decide what kind of stay you’d like.
