Maclean combines a striking rocky landscape with Yaegl heritage and Scottish-influenced history. The Pinnacles are a natural rock formation and also an important cultural heritage site for the Yaegl, the local Indigenous community. Stacked, balanced rocks give the place its geological character. So discovering Maclean begins with a distinctive natural feature whose cultural significance is also part of the place.

Rock formations and views

At Pinnacle Rock, a viewing platform adds another perspective. From the platform, there are individual views of the rock formation, the town of Maclean and the Clarence River beyond The Pinnacles.

Maclean Lookout offers a different perspective: it is two kilometres from the town centre and accessible via a well-maintained road. From there, views stretch across the coast, bushland, sugarcane fields, river, islands and the town. This mix of natural landscape, cultivated land, water and settlement gives the view a broad sweep. At the summit, there are picnic tables and a turning area that can also accommodate tour buses and caravans. Maclean Lookout Reserve is used for walking and exercise.

History at the museum and Stone Cottage

Maclean can also be explored through its cultural and social history. The Maclean District Museum and Stone Cottage offers insights into the region's history. Stone Cottage was built between 1879 and 1889 and recreates a typical home from around the turn of the century. The museum covers a wide range of topics: Yaegl culture, Maclean's Scottish roots, and the agricultural and boat-building industries, as well as recreations of an early classroom and hospital. The cottage gives an impression of a home from that period, while the museum's topics and recreations offer further ways to explore regional history. This combination of cultural traditions, work and public institutions brings the diversity of the history on display to life.

Scottish traditions in Maclean

Maclean's Scottish roots are also visible in its streetscape: hundreds of power poles painted with tartan patterns line the historic streets. This decoration offers a different perspective from the topics and recreations at the museum. The Maclean Highland Gathering also celebrates Scottish traditions with competitions for bagpipers, drummers, dancers and athletes. The first Highland Gathering in Maclean was held at the Maclean Showgrounds in 1894. The Gathering's solo piping competition takes place every year in Maclean on Good Friday afternoon and evening. If you particularly want to see this competition, check the specific event dates before travelling.

Choose the right focus for your trip

Those especially interested in culture can make the museum, Stone Cottage and Highland themes the focus of their visit; for nature and scenic views, Maclean Lookout and Pinnacle Rock take centre stage.
