Ocean pools, surf, sheltered bays and street art give Cronulla its distinct character. Plan a stay that combines water, parks and walks. Families may be especially interested in the pools and park facilities; the Walk The Walls offers a cultural addition to the water-based activities.

Ocean Pools and Surf

The Cronulla Rock Pools comprise two ocean pools close to each other. They can be accessed from Dunningham Park or Cronulla Park. Families and groups of friends swim in the Gunnamatta Park Tidal Baths and picnic there on weekends. On hot summer days, children jump off the wharf into the water after school. Swimming and a break in the park offer a different focus from the surf at North Cronulla Beach.

North Cronulla Beach has one main stretch of beach with surf. The natural current at the southern end creates consistent sandbanks and good surf; conditions vary with the weather and sea state. The sheltered beaches and bays between South Cronulla and Salmon Haul are also options, as is a walk along The Esplanade. You can tailor your stay around pools, surf or sheltered stretches of coastline.

Time in Gunnamatta Park

The green Gunnamatta Park has a children’s playground, covered picnic shelters, accessible toilets, barbecue facilities and a pavilion. If you’re travelling with children, you can plan time for the playground and a picnic as well as swimming. Facilities may change, so it’s worth checking their current status before your visit.

On Foot: Coastal Walk and Street Art

The Cronulla Esplanade Walk is classified as Grade 1 and 2 – easy – and has accessible access. There is an alternative route behind the Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club that avoids the steps. If steps affect your plans for the day, this route option makes a practical difference. As the classification and access depend on conditions on site, check the current path conditions if needed.

The Walk The Walls is a street art trail through Cronulla’s streets and laneways. While a walk along The Esplanade and coastal activities focus on movement and water, this trail turns your attention to art in public spaces. You can also choose your plans for the day based on whether you’d rather spend time by the beach or explore Cronulla’s street art.

Getting There and Choosing Accommodation

A direct train service runs from Sydney’s CBD to the coast, making it possible to get there without a car. Check current train services before you travel. When looking for a hotel in Cronulla, your planned activities can be a useful starting point: consider whether pools and swimming, a walk, sheltered beaches, or parks and street art will shape your stay. Then compare that focus with the specific location that matters to you for your trip.
