Karamea is surrounded by Kahurangi National Park. Nearby, native rainforest, limestone and caves meet coastal scenery and walks right in town. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between experiences in Karamea and trips to natural attractions in the surrounding area. Karamea is part of the Buller District, which stretches from Punakaiki in the south to Kahurangi National Park at the northern tip of the West Coast and also includes Reefton.

Rainforest, limestone and caves

About 11 kilometres north of Karamea, an old forestry road branches off the road to Kohaihai and leads inland to Ōparara Basin. The Moria Gate and Mirror Tarn Loop passes through pristine old-growth rainforest to Moria Gate Arch and Mirror Tarn. Along the way, you may be able to spot tomtits, wekas, kākā and the large Powelliphanta land snail; sightings are not guaranteed. The Ōparara Valley Track passes through heavily forested, old terrace land. Oparara Basin Guided Tours offers guided eco-tours through temperate rainforest and to the limestone caves and formations in Ōparara Basin. Check availability and booking arrangements before you travel; road and track conditions may change.

The Fenian Caves Track offers a different kind of experience: an 80-metre section of cave includes scrambling over steep or slippery areas and walking in a small stream in the dark. There are three freely accessible caves along the track. However, exploring Cavern Creek Cave is suitable only for experienced, well-equipped cavers. The cave system can flood easily, and rain can change conditions inside the caves. Keep this in mind when deciding whether to include cave exploration in your trip.

Walks in and around Karamea

The Karamea Riverbank and Estuary Walk is an evening walk that takes at least 45 minutes. It starts behind the domain or at the river access point at the end of Wharf Road, and follows the Karamea River to its estuary. At a suitable tide, the estuary offers opportunities for birdwatching; the route also connects with the end of Ray Street. For a different loop walk, Flagstaff takes at least an hour and circles a frequently changing sand spit. There is access to the sea and river estuary, and fishing may be possible depending on the season. Reach Flagstaff via the road to the airfield; at the turn-off, head towards the beach. Check seasonal fishing conditions locally.

The stated walking times can also help you plan your day: the Big Rimu Tree is reached via a 45-minute loop through native bush; the trailhead is 7 kilometres along Umere Road. A short, easy 20-minute walk leads to Lake Hanlon from a signposted point 20 kilometres south of Karamea. These offer two different outing options: a loop through the bush and a shorter walk to a lake.

You can experience the area's history on the South Terrace Zig Zag Track: the route was originally used by early settlers and continues to an old cemetery of the first European settlers. Mountain biking is prohibited on this designated Heritage Track. By contrast, mountain bikes are allowed on the Heaphy Track from 1 May to 30 November. Check current conditions before riding.

Market and water activities

The Karamea Market is held on Saturday mornings in summer, from October to April, in front of the Karamea Community Centre. In bad weather, it moves indoors. Stalls offer fresh fruit and vegetables, preserves, plants, handicrafts and other locally available goods; the selection may vary from one market day to another. If the market fits your travel plans, check the dates before you arrive.

For water activities, KARAMEA SURF & SUPS offers equipment hire and lessons. The activities include experiences on the sea as well as on estuaries and rivers around Karamea. Check the provider's details before booking.

If you plan several outings, factor their different starting points, walking times and seasonal conditions into your daily schedule. This will help you choose a base that suits the experiences you actually want to enjoy.
