Rapahoe between coast, forest and cliffs
Accommodation in Rapahoe
Rapahoe is defined by its beach, coastal forest and the Point Elizabeth Walkway. The Great Coast Road between Westport and Greymouth passes through the area. This brings the local coastal landscape together with a longer road route in your travel plans.
Coast and coastal forest
Rapahoe Beach is more than 2 km long and is bordered by Point Elizabeth headland. In the Rapahoe Scenic Reserve, extensive mixed coastal forest stretches from the limestone range to the cliff edge. Two distinct landscape features take centre stage: the long coastline and a forest that extends from the limestone range to the cliffs.
Forest trail and views at Point Elizabeth
The Point Elizabeth Walkway winds through varied forest to a panoramic viewing platform on a cliff. From an exposed rocky lookout, it offers views towards Mt Cook. The walkway is considered suitable for families and children and adds an outing through the forest with cliff-top views to the coastal scenery. Check the weather and track conditions before setting out.
Mountain biking on the Point Elizabeth Track is subject to a special seasonal rule: from 1 April to 30 September, it is permitted only during darkness. Check this requirement locally before your trip.
Rapahoe on the Great Coast Road
The northern end of the Point Elizabeth Walkway can be reached from Greymouth via State Highway 6 to Rapahoe. The Great Coast Road runs through Rapahoe between Westport and Greymouth. The entire drive takes about 90 minutes at usual speed limits; stops, weather and road conditions affect the actual travel time.
In the wider region, the Great Coast Road runs along the ancient limestone cliffs of Paparoa National Park and beside the Tasman Sea. Nesting sites of the world's smallest penguins lie along the route. These highlights are part of the wider road trip and are not specific to Rapahoe alone.
More nature and cultural experiences in the Grey District
Beyond Rapahoe's coastal scenery, the wider Grey District offers other nature and cultural experiences. Lake Brunner and Moana have abundant birdlife, as well as wetland and rainforest ecosystems. Shantytown Heritage Park is in Paroa, 10 km south of Greymouth. Experienced gold miners guide visitors as they pan for gold; admission includes a ride on one of the three historic passenger trains. As admission inclusions may change, check this offer before your visit.
Choose the right focus for your accommodation search
If you are looking for a hotel in Rapahoe, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on: the coastline and Point Elizabeth headland, the forest and cliff views along the Point Elizabeth Walkway, or Rapahoe as a stop on the Great Coast Road. If you would like to include other nature and history experiences, you can also plan around the wider Grey District. This way, your search reflects the kind of trip you want rather than relying on unverified accommodation claims.
