Charleston brings together several travel interests: rugged West Coast views, cave experiences and the town’s gold-mining history. The Constant Bay Loop offers a short coastal circuit; underground, the glowworm experience and Underworld Rafting are quite different, while a guided visit to Mitchells Gully Gold Mine adds a historical dimension. For planning, it helps to choose first by the type of outing. A coastal walk, a cave tour and a mine visit each offer a different reason to discover Charleston.

West Coast views on a short circuit

The Constant Bay Loop starts at the Constant Bay car park in Charleston and takes about 15 minutes. Along the way, you can enjoy views of the rugged West Coast, waves crashing against the rocks and the surrounding cliffs. The approximate duration makes the loop easy to factor in if you want to include a short coastal walk in your plans. The track is suitable for families. However, children must be supervised on exposed sections where there is a risk of falling. Both points matter: the track’s suitability for families does not remove the need for supervision. If you are travelling with children, check the conditions before your visit and plan the walk with this restriction in mind.

Glowworms or rafting underground

For the GlowWorm Cave Tour, meet at the Adventure Centre in Charleston 15 minutes before the tour begins. The Charleston GlowWorm Cave Adventure includes a 20-minute ride on the Rainforest Train, followed by a short walk to the cave. There, New Zealand glowworms of the species Arachnocampa luminosa cover the cave ceiling and follow the underground watercourse. The train ride, walk and glowworms define the character of this experience.

Underworld Rafting has a different focus. The experience begins with a local guide at the modern base in Charleston and continues from there to Metro Cave / Te Ananui Cave. The cave world features stalactites, stalagmites, large chambers and an underground lake. Rafting includes both floating on the lake and travelling in a tube through gentle rapids on the Nile / Waitakere River. While the Rainforest Train and glowworms are at the heart of the GlowWorm Cave Adventure, Underworld Rafting combines cave scenery with two water-based experiences.

When comparing the time estimates, it is important to consider what they cover: the Constant Bay Loop takes about 15 minutes; the Rainforest Train ride takes 20 minutes, followed by a short walk. The second figure therefore does not refer to the total duration of the cave adventure.

Gold-mining history and an expedition experience

Charleston’s gold-mining history can be explored on a guided visit to Mitchells Gully Gold Mine. This adds a historical focus alongside the coastal scenery and caves. Adventure Caving is a different, cave-based expedition experience involving abseiling, climbing, waterfalls, crawling and narrow passages; it is currently unavailable.

Experiences to guide your accommodation search

For families, the Constant Bay Loop’s stated suitability should be weighed alongside the need to supervise children on exposed sections.
