Pirinoa reveals several distinct sides: farm life at Palliser Ridge, the cultural role of Kohunui Marae and the historic heritage surrounding Burnside Church. Palliser Ridge offers an off-grid, one-bedroom retreat. Availability may change; check for your travel dates.

Palliser Ridge: Between Farm and Landscape

The Palliser Ridge Woolshed Store is located on the farm and is open by appointment. If you plan to visit, arrange your visit in advance. The farm’s products include fully traceable natural wool products, made with care entirely in Aotearoa New Zealand. Palliser Ridge’s landscape is also defined by its wide-open views: the ridge offers panoramic views of Cook Strait and the South Island.

History and Culture in Pirinoa

The Land Girl café serves coffee and simple meals and is housed in a former blacksmith’s workshop. Burnside Church was built in 1875 and has been preserved in near-original condition. It recalls the colonial settler community and Presbyterianism in rural New Zealand; owing to its aesthetic value, it remains a local landmark.

Kohunui Marae in Pirinoa is the spiritual and cultural base of the hapū associated with Kohunui Marae: Ngāti Rākaiwhakairi, Ngāti Hinewaka, Ngai Tukoko, Ngāti Ngāpūoterangi, Ngāti Rākairangi, Ngāti Hinetauira, Ngāti Kahukuranui, Ngāti Rua, Ngāti Rongomaiaia, Ngāti Rangaranga, Ngāti Kahukuraawhitia and Ngāti Mamoe. Together, these places reflect different aspects of Pirinoa’s history and culture.

Lagoon, Bird Habitat and Early Settlement

Near Pirinoa, Ōkorewa Lagoon lies east of Lake Ōnoke, just beyond the point. It is a ten-minute walk from the Lake Ferry Hotel car park. For twelve years, volunteers have been planting along the shores, creating important bird habitats, including for kororā, the little blue penguins.

The surrounding area also has archaeological traces: rectangular storage pits have been discovered near Pirinoa, around Tūranganui Stream. They are part of around 250 archaeological sites associated with early Māori settlement.

More Highlights in South Wairarapa District

The wider South Wairarapa District destination offers further, distinct landscape and cultural themes. Wairarapa Moana is a 10,000-hectare ecosystem of wetlands and open water. It provides habitat for native fish, birds and unique indigenous plants; you can also kayak in the Wairarapa Moana Wetlands.

The Remutaka Rail Trail is an easy 18-kilometre route for walking, running or mountain biking. Restored railway bridges and historic tunnels connect the route with railway history. At Cape Palliser, visitors can climb the 253 steps to the lighthouse; Cape Palliser is also home to the North Island’s largest fur seal colony.

Choose the Right Focus for Your Stay

When choosing a base, it is worth considering Pirinoa and the wider South Wairarapa District as distinct focuses: the town’s farming and cultural connections, along with the nearby lagoon, contrast with regional highlights such as Wairarapa Moana, railway relics and Cape Palliser.
