Waitomo District: Caves, Trails and Culture

On the edge of the village of Waitomo Caves lies the Waitomo Glowworm Cave. Its history dates back to an early exploration of the underground river entrance: in December 1887, British surveyor Fred Mace and local Māori chief Taane Tinorou were the first to explore this entrance. Waitomo Caves thus brings together a distinctive cave landscape and a tangible local history. When planning your trip, it is worth considering both: the caves and the trails, exhibitions and activities, each offering a different focus.

Cave knowledge and getting around the village

The Waitomo Caves Museum & Discovery Centre is in the heart of Waitomo Village. The Glowworm Caves are within walking distance, and there is a bus stop outside the building. The museum is New Zealand’s only specialist cave museum. Its interactive exhibitions cover glowworms, fossils, karst landscapes, Māori artefacts and the history of cave exploration in Aotearoa. It also serves as Waitomo’s information centre and sells tickets for the Glowworm Caves, black-water rafting and other adventure activities. Natural history, culture and cave exploration come together at this visitor destination.

Limestone trails and cave experiences

The Waitomo Walkway starts opposite the Waitomo Museum of Caves in Waitomo Village. The route passes through classic limestone scenery, follows the Waitomo Stream and takes in both forest and open farmland. The changing landscapes give the trail its own character. Nearby, the Ruakuri Walk is a loop through a wooded gorge with naturally sculpted rock formations and low limestone arches.

The cave experiences also offer different activities. The Black Labyrinth tour follows an underground river through fast-flowing water and includes waterfall jumps in the glowworm-lit Ruakuri Cave. The Black Abyss tour includes a rappel into the depths of the cave, a zipline through a glowworm-lit cave and climbs over underground waterfalls. Near Waitomo Caves, trails in Ruakuri Cave pass limestone formations and crystal-like flowstone curtains through a spiral entrance. Near Waitomo Caves, Ruakuri Cave is fully accessible to wheelchairs and strollers up to 65 cm wide. Also near Waitomo Caves, Aranui Cave is considered the most delicate and intimate of Waitomo’s main caves.

Food and practical planning

Tomo Bar & Eatery is in the centre of the village of Waitomo Caves and serves local beer on tap and hearty food. Offerings may change. If you’re driving farther west, plan ahead for fuel: there are no service stations west of Waitomo. Otorohanga, Piopio or Te Kuiti are options for refuelling before continuing; check in advance whether anything has changed at these facilities.

Waitomo District: longer tours and cultural places

The wider Waitomo District destination also offers longer tours alongside cave experiences. The Timber Trail is a two-day cycling experience or a three- to four-day hike; a section can also be completed as a one-day experience. The route follows former tramlines and logging roads through Pureora Forest Park, from Pureora in Waitomo District to Ongarue in Ruapehu. It starts in Pureora Forest and is easily accessible via SH30 between Te Kuiti and Mangakino. The different time frames help you work out how long you’d like to spend on this part of your trip.

The cultural history of Waitomo District also extends beyond cave exploration. Te Tokanganui a noho is the oldest traditional meeting house still in use in Aotearoa. It is of national significance and remains a treasured taonga of Ngāti Rōrā and Ngāti Maniapoto. Mangaokewa Reserve features riverside areas, native bush, waterfalls and open farmland. Walking trails run through the reserve and form part of the Te Araroa Trail.
