Te Miro appeals to travellers looking to combine active experiences with a tangible insight into the area’s history. Te Miro Mountain Bike Park offers trails of varying difficulty and lessons; nearby Gudex Memorial Park offers a different experience, with picnic areas, views, and cherry trees in bloom in spring. Te Miro’s history also includes the settlement of soldiers and Ngāti Hauā’s cultural connection to the area.

Mountain bike trails and lessons at Te Miro Mountain Bike Park

The trails at Te Miro Mountain Bike Park are graded from 1 to 4, ranging from beginner to advanced. This offers a range of options for different riding abilities, rather than limiting the park to a single difficulty level. The park also offers dedicated mountain bike lessons for different age groups and skill levels. The children’s lessons are specifically for children aged 7 to 12.

Riding at the park is free. Riverside Adventures rents out high-quality mountain bikes that you can ride there. For planning purposes, you can distinguish between three aspects: the trail grading, the lessons on offer, and the option to rent a mountain bike. Which matters to you depends on whether you mainly want to ride, plan to take lessons, or want to rent a bike.

History and cultural connection

A notable historical reference point is 1916: that year, the government bought James Taylor’s 12,000-acre Te Miro estate to settle soldiers there. The stated size gives a sense of the estate’s scale; the purchase links the area’s history to the settlement purpose of the time.

Te Miro Scenic Reserve has an overlay classification that recognises Ngāti Hauā’s traditional, cultural, spiritual, and historical connection to the area. Te Miro therefore brings different historical perspectives together: the history of the estate purchase and soldier settlement, and Ngāti Hauā’s recognised connection to the area. A separate, different kind of place nearby is Gudex Memorial Park: a picnic spot with expansive open spaces and clear views of the Waikato and Hauraki Plains. The cherry trees in bloom add a seasonal highlight in spring.

Nature, culture, and activities in the Waipa District

The wider destination of the Waipa District offers another regional perspective. Maungatautari Ecological Island Reserve is the largest ecological “island” on New Zealand’s mainland. Maungatautari is surrounded by a 47-kilometre predator-proof fence enclosing 3,400 hectares of Mount Maungatautari. Lake Ngā Roto also has a 5.9-kilometre loop track open to walkers, runners, and cyclists. Track conditions can change seasonally, so it’s best to take them into account when planning your visit.

The activities on and around the water also vary. Mighty River Domain is a regional, national, and international hub for rowing, sailing, powerboating, water skiing, and Waka Ama on Lake Karāpiro. Karāpiro Lake Domain holds ancestral, spiritual, historical, cultural, and economic significance for Mana Whenua. In the Waipa District, the options range from active experiences to places whose significance also lies in their cultural history.

For a historical perspective on the region, Te Awamutu Museum was established in 1935. It tells the story of the history, society, culture, and development of the Waipā District. Kihikihi Police House offers another historical connection: built in 1907, it is the only surviving example of its kind in the country that has remained in public ownership at its original location. Check visitor arrangements before you travel. Te Ara Wai: Journeys is a free, self-guided tour of culturally significant places throughout the Waipā District, offering another way to explore the region.
