Timber history, carved art and the Waikato River give South Waikato District its many facets. Notable points of interest include the Arapuni Suspension Bridge on the river, the NZ Timber Museum south of Putāruru and the Talking Poles in Tokoroa. When planning your trip, it’s worth first considering which of these themes you’d most like to shape your stay.

River landscapes and the history of the timber industry

The Arapuni Suspension Bridge is on the Waikato River, downstream from Arapuni Power Station. The river is a clear point of reference for this part of the district. The NZ Timber Museum tells a different story: it is just south of Putāruru on State Highway 1 and offers the chance to see and experience the history of New Zealand’s timber industry.

The museum was established in 1927 to celebrate, document and preserve this industrial history, with a particular focus on South Waikato District. Those interested in the development of an industry and its regional heritage will find a clear thematic focus here. The bridge and the museum appeal to different interests: one point of interest is the river, the other the history of the timber industry.

Art in the town centre and two mosaics

The Talking Poles are unique sculptures and a collection of carved poles in the town centre. Created for locals and visitors, they represent Tokoroa’s various cultures, clubs and organisations. Their significance lies not only in the form of each individual pole, but also in what they make visible together: a diversity of communities and cultural connections.

Putāruru Waterpark also has an artistic touch: it features two large mosaics. Lake Moananui, in turn, surrounds an artificial lake built by Matamata County Council in 1974/75. Local themes thus range from carved art to the history of a designed lake landscape. If you’re considering these places for your trip, you can weigh up art, timber history, and river or lake themes according to your own interests.

Plan places to visit and your accommodation search

There’s no need to base your accommodation choice on just one theme. Perhaps you’re most interested in timber history and art, or perhaps your focus is more on the Waikato River or the artificial lake. Prioritising in this way makes your search more specific: it starts with the experiences that matter to you, rather than with a general idea of which place would be the best base for every traveller.

To find your way around the district, you can also explore Tirau, Putaruru, Piarere, Tokoroa and Okoroire.

Check the latest opening information before your visit.

In Waikato, the Over the Mountain Track, including Te Raki Track and Te Tonga Track, follows a historic route from Hicks Road in the north to Pukeatua in the south. The walk takes about five to six hours. From the southern peaks, there are views of the forest and Waikato’s lush landscape. For a different kind of nature experience, the ancient forest of Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari is home to more than 730 native species, including kiwis and kākāpƍs. The Moa-Hunter experience is also offered there: an immersive cultural journey led by a Mana-whenua guide.
