Huntly: River, Lakes and Stories
Accommodation in Huntly
Huntly on the Waikato River
The Waikato River defines Huntly’s setting. A prominent landmark along the river is Huntly Power Station, which can be seen from many parts of Huntly and beyond. Tainui Bridge provides another point of reference in the townscape. Opened in 1959, it connects the eastern and western parts of town across the river. Along the water, you’ll find both a striking power station and a bridge that links Huntly’s neighbourhoods.
Lake Hakanoa is also home to a distinctive venue: the Green Cathedral is a popular choice for weddings. It has seating for 180 guests and parking for 40 cars. Those interested in Lake Hakanoa can also find a trail in the Waikato District divided into thirteen sections. These include gardens, wetlands, a reserve with native trees and the Green Cathedral.
Lakeside Trails and Activities on the Water
On the western edge of Huntly lies Lake Puketirini, formed from a disused coal mine. It is part of a Waikato District Council park. A 3.5-kilometre walking and cycling trail runs along the lakeshore, with other trails leading through the park. Access is via Rotowaro Road. This offers two different ways to spend time outdoors: a loop along the shore and trails through the park.
Lake Puketirini is also suitable for activities on the water, including kayaking, waka ama, boating and water skiing. Another trail runs alongside the Huntly section of the Waikato Expressway near Te Iringa Lagoon. Together, these create a picture of a place where water is not only part of the landscape, but also a focus for activity and exploration.
Stories, Māori Heritage and Town History
Huntly Museum, Te Whare Taonga O Raahui Pookeka, celebrates the heritage of Raahui Pookeka with collections and exhibitions that bring together history, stories and community. The exhibitions are interactive, with hands-on activities too. For visitors who want to learn about the stories of the place as well as its trails and lakes, the museum offers a distinct way to explore Huntly’s history.
Another landmark is Whakataki Paa. Designed by Te Waamu McGrath, it rises above the Waikato Expressway, can be accessed from Ralph Road, and honours the rich Māori heritage of Raahui Pookeka Huntly. The Ralph Mine Memorial commemorates the 43 men who died in one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most tragic mining disasters. The museum, landmark and memorial offer different ways to engage with local history and cultural heritage.
Choose the Right Base for Your Trip
Train travel may also be a consideration when planning. The Te Huia train runs from Hamilton to The Strand in Auckland, stopping at Huntly | Raahui Pookeka among other places. Check the current timetable before travelling. You can then choose a hotel or other accommodation based on the experiences that matter most to you during your stay.
More Landscapes in the Waikato District
The wider Waikato District destination includes other distinct landscapes and routes. The Hakarimata Summit Track climbs to 374 metres; from the lookout tower, views extend to the coast, across the Waikato Basin and towards Ruapehu. In the Hakarimata Scenic Reserve near Ngāruawāhia, trails pass through native bush, where you can also see kauri trees. The Hakarimata Rail Trail follows the former railway line between Ngāruawāhia and Glen Massey to cascades along the stream, and is a family-friendly route for walking and cycling. Check local access conditions before setting out.
For a different kind of outing, the Waikato District’s Piipiiwharauroa Trail is an 18-kilometre route across the Te Uku Wind Farm site. Walking the return route takes about four hours, and cycling it takes about two hours. Access and wind farm operations may vary, so check the conditions before setting out. The Te Awa River Ride offers a different focus: this 65-kilometre concrete path runs along the Waikato River from Ngaruawahia to Lake Karapiro and is designed for cycling and walking. These regional examples vary in length, surface and time required—a useful complement if you’re considering Huntly as part of a trip through the Waikato District.
