Tokarahi brings together the history of a station and the development of rural community life in North Otago. Tokarahi Station Homestead represents the domestic side of early pastoralism; Tokarahi Hall tells its own story of origins, relocation and remembrance. Historic farm buildings can also be found nearby. Other themes include a 9-hole golf course and a nearby section of the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail. This brings together architectural history and different kinds of activities.

Tokarahi Station Homestead

Tokarahi Station Homestead was probably built around 1876 and received extensive additions around 1890. Its historical significance lies in its connection to Tokarahi Station and the domestic side of early pastoralism in North Otago. Architecturally, it is also considered an outstanding example of a station house of its time. The front additions include a large entrance hall with columns, a vaulted skylight and elaborate plasterwork. The probable construction date and later extensions provide an overview of two stages in its architectural history. Alongside its historical associations, the entrance hall makes its own architectural statement.

A Story of Change: Tokarahi Hall

Tokarahi Hall began as Bailey’s Hall in Maerewhenua and opened with a grand concert in May 1896. The Tokarahi Public Hall Trust purchased the hall in 1904. Tokarahi Hall was dismantled and rebuilt at its present site. This history connects its former name and location with the hall’s later development in Tokarahi.

The war memorial gates and memorial wall at Tokarahi Hall were designed by Forrester and Steenson in 1920 and completed by 1922. Tokarahi Hall, along with the gates and memorial wall, has architectural, historical, social and commemorative significance. Community development, relocation and remembrance offer different perspectives on this part of the area’s history.

Farm Buildings Nearby

The farm buildings of Tokarahi Station are located near Tokarahi. They include a combined cookhouse and accommodation for male workers, as well as a combined woolshed and stables. The buildings were probably constructed around 1878 and were likely designed by the Ōamaru architectural partnership Forrester and Lemon.

As outstanding examples of rural farm buildings from the 1870s, they have historical and architectural significance. This includes their connection to the McMaster family at Tokarahi Station and to early pastoralism in North Otago. The combination of a cookhouse and workers’ accommodation, alongside a woolshed and stables, offers a tangible insight into the different functions of these farm buildings.

Cycling Route and Golf: Different Ways to Get Active

Nearby Section 8 of the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail highlights the historic Tokarahi Branch Rail Line. The route follows Peaks Road and Tunnel Road to the Rakis Railway Tunnel. There is a toilet and picnic area at kilometre 26. This section combines a cycling route with the history of the railway line and a named rest stop. Check current trail conditions and the state of facilities before setting out.

Another active option is Tokarahi Golf Club: its 9-hole course offers spectacular views of the Maerewhenua River and Waitaki Valley. Compared with the Cycle Trail section, it offers two different ways to get active: a round of golf with scenic views and a cycling route along named roads to the tunnel. If you’re planning a round, check the club’s current operating status in advance.
